History

Unimal originated as a Sharia theological academy (Akademi Ilmu Agama) established in 1969 by the local government of North Aceh Regency. Following several name changes, it became the Malikussaleh University Foundation (Yayasan Universitas Malikussaleh) in 1980, named after the first Samudera Pasai ruler Malikussaleh. Its faculties were first formally registered in 1984. It was reintegrated in 1989 and nationalized in 2001. [1]

The current rector, Apridar, has been active since 2010 and is serving his second term. [2]

In 2017, the university's rectorate building was set on fire by a former employee. [3]

Students

The university had a freshman class of over 3,000 in 2017, with the third largest number of BIDIKMISI (Indonesian Government scholarships for low-income university students) recipients. [4] [5] They are separated into seven undergraduate faculties (Economics, Law, Social and Political Science, Medicine, Education, Agriculture and Engineering) and five master's programs. [1]

The university was accredited "B" for the 2016-2021 period by the national accreditation body. [6]

Islamic criminal law in Aceh Sharia criminal law in Aceh, Indonesia

The province of Aceh in Indonesia enforces some provisions of Islamic criminal law, the sole Indonesian province to do so. In Aceh, Islamic criminal law is called jinayat. The laws that implement it are called Qanun Jinayat or Hukum Jinayat, roughly meaning "Islamic criminal code". Although the largely-secular laws of Indonesia apply in Aceh, the provincial government passed additional regulations, some derived from Islamic criminal law, after Indonesia authorized the province to enact regional regulations and granted Aceh special autonomy to implement Islamic law. Offences under the provisions include alcohol consumption, production and distribution, gambling, adultery, rape, sexual harassment, certain intimacies outside marriage, and certain homosexual acts. Punishments include caning, fines, and imprisonment. There is no provision for stoning; an attempt to introduce it in 2009 was vetoed by Governor Irwandi Yusuf. In 2016 Aceh processed 324 first instance court cases under Islamic criminal law, and carried out at least 100 caning sentences.
