Marriage in Iran

The legal age for marriage in Iran is 9-13 for girls and 15 for boys, unless there is court order for children 9 or younger with parents or guardian approve. [1] [2] [3] However, in practice, many marriages involve adults with minors. [4] Polygamy is allowed for men, with certain conditions - eg. legal registration - women, on the other hand, can only marry one man at a time. Divorce is legal and can be initiated by either party. The divorce rate in Iran is relatively high with rates being as many as one divorce in three marriages by 2023. [5] Marriage is encouraged in Iran, and there are social pressures to marry. The government provides financial incentives for marriage and childbirth such as loans, land and matchmaking services as well as taxes on unmarried invidiuals. [6] [7] [8] [9]

Historically consanguineous marriage has been popular. [10]

Marriages with foreigners are legal but they must be registered, a foreign man married to an Iranian woman "will not be considered an Iranian legal citizen". [11]

As of 2024 mean age for marriage had become 29.5 for men and 25 for women. [12] According to The 82-page report, issued by Iran's parliamentary research branch, and compiled from interviews with 142,000 students, found 80 percent of females acknowledged having premarital sex. [13]

As of 2024 the marriage loan is around 300 million toman ($5000 USD) for boy and girls under 25 and 23 years. [14]

Background

Temporary marriages have been popularized by Iranian regime. [15] The Iranian regime disapproves of casual dating or premarital sex. [16] Despite government program and policies marriage rates have been historically low. [17] 20% of all women born in Iran in 1970-80s are not a in committed relationship. [18] [19] In 2024 the Iranian government started paying insurance incentives for egg freezing for females. [20]

The wedding gifts or Mahr must be given to bride as she demands by the groom usually paid through gold currency and was tax free as of 2024. [21]

Process

Legal free genetic tests results are required in marriage contract documents. [22] [23]

There are state mandatory pre marriage counseling for couples they must partake. [24]

Virginhood female hymen check are not required but are certified by state Legal Medicine organization. [25]

Cohabiting

According to Iranian regime the co-habitation ("white marriage") is strictly illegal and forbidden. [26]

Divorce

A husband can divorce his wife “whenever he wishes to do so” (Art. 1133) with a few exceptions through uttering in Arabic  : "زَوْجَتِی name of wife طالِقٌ".To null the marriage contract it must be done in front of two males. [27]

Conjugal Visit is a 2022 Iranian romantic drama film directed by Omid Shams and written by Omid Shams, Bahman Ark and Ali Sarahang. It stars Parinaz Izadyar and Hootan Shakiba as Parvaneh and Farhad, a couple who met secretly through Farhad's phone in prison which he sometimes lends to Parvaneh's father—who is in prison with Farhad—to call his daughter, and started to develop feelings for each other.

Rubika Persian: سوپرپیام‌رسان اپلیکیشن روبیکا is a proprietary, cross-platform Iranian messaging app. It is sponsored by the public-private mobile telecommunications companies Tusca holding, Mobile Telecommunication Company of Iran, and MTN Irancell. Rubika features include a free digital assistant, video calls, business pages and shopping channels, creator ads monetization, photo sharing, live broadcast, TV and video streaming, payment wallet, dark mode, Balad maps and required-to-purchase Bime free health insurance. The platform has 15.5 million daily and 35-40 million monthly users. It has financial backed equal to all Iranian startups.

The National Credit Network is an Iranian food, staple and other goods coupon ration program established by the government of Iran in June 2023.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">State Welfare Organization of Iran</span>

The State Welfare Organization of Iran, also known as the Behzisti Organization, is a working organization under the Ministry of Cooperatives, Labour, and Social Welfare. Established after the 1979 revolution, the organization mainly works towards the betterment, rehabilitation, and improvement of the lives of disabled people, people in need of care, and orphaned children. It supervises and runs special needs education, addiction treatments and offers suicide awareness events.

The Municipality of Tehran is the city runner for Iranian capital city alongside Islamic City Council of Tehran. There are 22 districts managed by regional municipals. The city has 67 thousand administrative employees. The municipality owns Hamshahri.
