Olivia Martha Imalwa (born Ekandjo) is the Prosecutor General of Namibia since 2004. [1] [2]
Imalwa went into exile to Angola in 1982,studied and graduated with distinctions from United Nations Institute for Namibia in 1985 in Zambia. She went on to study LLB degree with honours in 1988 at the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom and returned to Namibia from exile in 1989. She served as co-ordinator for the Legal Assistance Centre after independence in March 1990 in Ongwediva before becoming a State Prosecutor in 1992 at Oshakati and subsequently serving as Control Prosecutor for the northern towns. Martha Imalwa became State Advocate in the High Court of Namibia and was appointed as Deputy Prosecutor-General of Namibia in 2000 before being appointed in 2004 as Prosecutor-General of Namibia and was reappointed in the same position in 2013 by President Hifikepunye Pohamba. [4] [5]
South West Africa was a territory under South African administration from 1915 to 1966,and under South African occupation from 1966 to 1990. Renamed Namibia by the United Nations in 1968,it became independent under this name on 21 March 1990.
The South West Africa People's Organisation,officially known as the SWAPO Party of Namibia,is a political party and former independence movement in Namibia. Founded in 1960,it has been the governing party in Namibia since the country achieved independence in 1990. The party continues to be dominated in number and influence by the Ovambo ethnic group.
Samuel Shafiishuna Daniel Nujoma,is a Namibian revolutionary,anti-apartheid activist and politician who served three terms as the first President of Namibia,from 1990 to 2005. Nujoma was a founding member and the first president of the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) in 1960. Before 1960,SWAPO was known as the Ovambo People's Organisation (OPO). He played an important role as leader of the national liberation movement in campaigning for Namibia's political independence from South African rule. He established the People's Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN) in 1962 and launched a guerrilla war against the apartheid government of South Africa in August 1966 at Omugulugwombashe,beginning after the United Nations withdrew the mandate for South Africa to govern the territory. Nujoma led SWAPO during the lengthy Namibian War of Independence,which lasted from 1966 to 1989.
Theo-Ben Gurirab was a Namibian politician who served in various senior government positions. He served as the second prime minister of Namibia from 28 August 2002 to 20 March 2005,following the demotion and subsequent resignation of Hage Geingob. Previously he was the country's first Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1990 to 2002 and was President of the United Nations General Assembly from 1999 to 2000. He was Speaker of the National Assembly of Namibia from 2005 to 2015,when he was replaced by Peter Katjavivi. Gurirab ultimately resigned from politics in 2015.
Hifikepunye Lucas Pohamba is a Namibian politician who served as the second president of Namibia from 21 March 2005 to 21 March 2015. He won the 2004 presidential election overwhelmingly as the candidate of SWAPO and was reelected in 2009. Pohamba was the president of SWAPO from 2007 until his retirement in 2015. He is a recipient of the Ibrahim Prize.

Hage Gottfried Geingob was a Namibian politician who served as the third president of Namibia from 2015 until his death in February 2024. Geingob was the first prime minister of Namibia from 1990 to 2002,and served again from 2012 to 2015. Between 2008 and 2012 Geingob served as Minister of Trade and Industry. In November 2014,Geingob was elected president of Namibia by an overwhelming margin. In November 2017,Geingob became the third president of the ruling SWAPO Party after winning by a large margin at the party's sixth Congress. He served as the party's president until his death. In August 2018,Geingob began a one-year term as chairperson of the Southern African Development Community.
Ella Ndatega Kamanya was a Namibian politician and businesswoman. She joined the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) in exile in 1978 and survived the Battle of Cassinga during the conflict with the South African Army.
Ivy Florence Matsepe-Casaburri was a South African politician. She was the 2nd premier of the Free State and South Africa's Minister of Communications from 1999 until her death. She served briefly as South Africa's acting president in 2005,when both President Thabo Mbeki and the deputy president were outside the country. Furthermore,she was chosen by the cabinet to be the constitutional and official head of state in an interim capacity for 14 hours on 25 September 2008,between the resignation of Thabo Mbeki and the taking of office by Kgalema Motlanthe. She was the first woman to have held the post of president in South Africa and the first woman to be head of state of South Africa since Elizabeth II's reign as Queen of South Africa ended in 1961. She remained the only woman with this distinction until July 2021,when Angie Motshekga was appointed acting president.
Doreen Nampiye Sioka is a Namibian politician. She is member of the National Assembly of Namibia since 1994 for the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO),and a member of the cabinet since 2005,serving as Minister of Gender Equality,Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare.
Erkki Nghimtina is a Namibian politician and former military officer in the Namibia Defence Force (NDF). A member of the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO),Nghimtina served as member of the National Assembly of Namibia from 1995 to 2020. He served in various cabinet roles from 2005 to 2020.
Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila is a Namibian politician who has served as the Prime Minister of Namibia since 2015. She is a member of the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) and has been a member of the National Assembly of Namibia since 1995. She served as Minister of Finance from 2003 to 2015. She is the first woman to serve as Prime Minister of Namibia.
Peter Sam Shivute is a Namibian judge who has served as the chief justice of the Supreme Court of Namibia since 2004. He is the first black Namibian to be appointed to this position.
Ndemupelila Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah,nicknamed NNN,is a Namibian politician who became president-elect of Namibia after winning the presidential election on 3 December 2024. She is scheduled to be Namibia's fifth president and the first woman to hold this position. She is serving as the third vice-president of Namibia since February 2024. She was also SWAPO's first female presidential candidate for the 2024 Namibian general election. In 2017,Nandi-Ndaitwah was elected vice-president of SWAPO,the first woman to serve in that position.
Erastus Amutenya Uutoni is a Namibian SWAPO politician who has served in the cabinet of Namibia since March 2010.
Monica Nashandi is a Namibian diplomat and politician. Nashandi was Namibia's ambassador to Scandinavian countries as well as the former High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. Nashandi was removed from the SWAPO list for the 2009 general election because she had not registered to vote,a requirement under Namibian law. Nashandi was Namibia's ambassador to the United States of America from 2019 to 2020.
Lady May is a Namibian singer. She came to fame in 2004 with the release of her first album Kamali which won her her first award at the Sanlam-NBC Music Awards. Namundjebo is one of the most popular female singers in Namibia. Her music is also recognized beyond the Namibian border and she has been nominated and won several awards at the Channel O Music Video Awards.
Hon. Jemma Nunu Kumba is a South Sudanese politician. She is the current Minister of Gender,Child and Social Welfare of South Sudan. She founded the Sudan women Parliamentary Caucus in 2004 at the start of the comprehensive peace agreement. She was chosen by the SPLM as the speaker of the Revitalised Transitional National Legislative Assembly (R-TNLA). She became the first woman to preside over the parliament of South Sudan.
