Marthandam CSI Church is one of the largest district churches in the Kanyakumari diocese in India. It has the privilege of being the center of various services connected with the Diocese, such as schools, colleges, hospitals, an embroidery industry, a book depot, a press and also a shopping complex. [3]

The church was built by Rev. Robert Sinclair. Sinclair was born in Scotland and came to India after his ordination as a minister on 3 August 1910.He was Sent to India as a Christian Missionary by The London Missionary Society(L.M.S.) . He succeeded Rev. H.I Hacker in 1919, and came to Marthandam in 1920. Rev. Sinclair served from 1919 to 1939.[ citation needed ]

On 26 July 1924, the foundation stone was laid by Rev. C.G. Marshall. It took ten years to complete the construction work and Rev. Sinclair personally labored with devotion to fulfill his vision. His dream was to make a beautiful place of worship for the emerging congregation in Marthandam. The church was completed and dedicated on 13 May 1933.[ citation needed ]

It is one of the three colleges of the southern districts, along with Scott Christian College and South Travancore Hindu College, to be accredited by NAAC as a 5 Star institution. The college is ranked 42nd among colleges in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2024.

Christianity in the state of Tamil Nadu, India is the second largest religion in the state. According to tradition, St. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles, landed in Malabar Coast in AD 52. In the colonial age many Portuguese, Dutch, British and Italian Christians came to Tamil Nadu. In April 2015, a part of the diocese was removed to form a new diocese, the Kollam-Kottarakkara Diocese. In Kerala, there were, until April 2015, three other CSI Dioceses viz: North Kerala Diocese, Madhya Kerala Diocese, East Kerala Diocese. In 2010, the diocese had 352 ordained pastors, 49 retired pastors and more than 200 church workers. There are 70 districts and 623 churches in this diocese.

William Tobias Ringeltaube, or Wilhelm Tobias Ringeltaube (1770- ?) was the first Protestant missionary in the far south of India. He spent much of his time in Travancore. He was the first child of Gottlieb Ringeltaube, Vicar of Scheidelwitz, near Brzeg, in Silesia, Prussia. He was born on 8 August 1770. The cause and date of his death are uncertain, but it is widely believed that he died of liver failure whilst on a voyage to Africa. Others believe that he was killed by the natives whilst on a mission to Jakarta.
