Martin Richard Alexander Halstead (born 1986or1987 [1] ) is a pilot and former entrepreneur who founded two short-lived aviation businesses.

Biography

His secondary education was at Abingdon School and D'Overbroeck's College. After a spell at Oxford Aviation Training, since early 2008 rebranded as Oxford Aviation Academy, Halstead decided to set up his own airline and focus on managing an aviation business.

Alpha One Airways

Halstead first attracted media attention in the UK in March 2005 when, at the age of 18, he announced the launch of Alpha One Airways. [1] Alpha One Airways never applied for an Air Operator's Certificate. Instead, Halstead planned to subcontract the operation of flights to another carrier.

Alpha One Airways was due to launch its commercial services on the route linking Oxford and Cambridge with flights starting on 18 April 2005. [2] Alpha One never operated any services on the route, although from 1 February 2006 another small airline, Sky Commuter, for a few weeks had scheduled flights linking the two university cities. [3]

After several changes of focus and false starts, the company eventually operated a route between the Isle of Man and Edinburgh using Piper Chieftain aircraft. In January 2006 it suspended operations having carried fewer than a hundred passengers. Alpha One Airways was supposedly going to refocus its operations, but nothing further came of the venture.

After Alpha One Airways

In an interview with The Oxford Times in October 2006, Halstead reflected on the Alpha One experience. The newspaper reported that Halstead was working again, this time at a music shop in Oxford city centre. [4] Halstead became a director of the company which owned the shop. [5]

Varsity Express

In January 2010 Halstead set up a new aviation venture called Varsity Express. [6]

The new company started services between Oxford and Edinburgh on 1 March 2010 and suspended operations one week later, after a take over by the aircraft leaser, LinksAir, fell through. Mr Halstead stated that he lost £3,500 of his own money in the venture. [6] [7]

It began full-fledged operations in 1995 with international flights added in 2004. The airline went public in 2005 and in 2007, when it acquired Air Sahara. It was the first and only privately owned Indian airline before the founding of Vistara in 2015. The airline is expected to re-commence its flight operations by the end of 2024, making it the first Indian airline to be revived after ceasing operations.

Tiger Airways Singapore Pte Ltd, operating as Tigerair, was a low-cost airline headquartered in Singapore. It operated services to regional destinations in Southeast Asia, Bangladesh, Taiwan, China and India from its main base at Singapore Changi Airport. It was founded as an independent airline in 2003, and was listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange under the Tiger Airways Holdings name in 2010. Mokulele Airlines is a regional airline operating in Hawaii. British Airways CityFlyer is a British regional airline, and a wholly owned subsidiary of British Airways with its head office based in Didsbury, Manchester, England. It operates a network of domestic and European services from its base at London City Airport. All services operate with BA's full colours, titles and flight numbers. BA Cityflyer Limited holds a United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority Type A Operating Licence, meaning that it is permitted to carry passengers, cargo and mail on aircraft with 20 or more seats.

Varsity Express was a regional airline based at London Oxford Airport in England. It was never a licensed airline, instead it sold tickets on flights operated by Linksair. Varsity Express operated only 11 scheduled flights over the space of one week in March 2010.

Delta Connection is a brand name for Delta Air Lines, under which a number of individually owned regional airlines primarily operate short- and medium-haul routes. Mainline major air carriers often use regional airlines to operate services via code sharing agreements in order to increase frequencies in addition to serving routes that would not sustain larger aircraft as well as for other competitive or operational reasons.

Eastern Airlines, LLC is an American airline founded in 2010. It operates Boeing 767s and Boeing 777s. It began as Dynamic Airways and later added "International" to its name to reflect its transition from a charter airline into scheduled international services. Under the Dynamic name, the airline was headquartered in High Point, North Carolina, offering service from New York to South America. It used to operate from Fort Lauderdale, Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York to the Caribbean, Cancún, and South America.
