He had two brothers, Dr. Mannasseh Phiri and Chris Phiri, both of whom live in Lusaka, Zambia, and four sisters: Irene Kabwe, Zondiwe Maboshe, Cecilia Phiri and Hlupo Phiri.

The country's participation at London marked its twelfth appearance in the Summer Olympics since its début at the 1964 Summer Olympics. Mumba was the national flag bearer at the opening and closing ceremonies.
