Martin Schumacher (born June 28, 1950) is a German statistician. He was the head of the Institute for Medical Biometry and Statistics of the Medical Center of the University of Freiburg from 1986 until 2017.

Life and work

Martin Schumacher graduated from the University of Dortmund with a diploma in mathematics and statistics in 1974. He stayed in Dortmund and earned his PhD in 1977. Between 1975 and 1979 and 1983 and 1986 he first worked as research assistant for Prof. Siegfried Schach and then as Professor for Statistics in Science. In between those periods of time in Dortmund, he spent the years 1979-1983 in Heidelberg at the Institute for Medicinal Statistics at the University of Heidelberg, headed by Herbert Immich. There he qualified as a professor in 1982 with a thesis focusing on the analysis of survival time. In 1984 he worked as a guest professor at the Department of Biostatistics of the University of Washington in Seattle, WA (USA). Shortly after returning to the statistics department of the University of Dortmund he was offered a professorship at the Institute for Medical Biometry and Statistics of University Medical Center Freiburg. He became the head of the institute from April 1986 until his retirement in May 2017.

Immediately after starting his job in Freiburg he founded a center for methodological support of therapy studies, one of the first of its kind at a German university medical center. In 1999 one of the first coordination centers for clinical studies (short KKS = Koordinierungszentrum für Klinische Studien) in Germany was founded at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg on the initiative of Martin Schumacher.

In addition to doing research another focus of Martin Schumacher was the training and mentorship of young research, so teaching was a priority. The book "Methodik Klinischer Studien" (Methodology of Clinical Trials) by Schumacher and Schulgen is not only the first book on this topic in the German language, but also the standard textbook in Germany.

Martin Schumacher was the dean of the Medical Faculty of the University of Freiburg between 2001 and 2003. He was a member of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics and there has been a cooperation with researchers and scientists in the fields of mathematics, physics, biology and computer science within the framework of the interdisciplinary Freiburg Center for Data Analysis and Modeling (FDM). [1] Due to several research projects initiated and led by Martin Schumacher the institute has become an internationally renowned research hub for biostatistics in Germany.

There were several international symposia focused on methodology, Martin Schumacher also recurrently hosted conferences on medical statistics in Oberwolfach and the International Biometrical Conference (IBC) in 2002, as well as the third meeting of the German Consortium in Statistics (DAGStat 2013). His international reputation can also be gleaned by the fact that he got invited to give the 21st Bradford Hill Memorial Lecture in 2012. Under the clinical aspect the Cochrane Collaboration/German Cochrane Center as well as the German Clinical Trials Register (DRKS) need to be mentioned.

Martin Schumacher is the (co-)author of over 250 scientific publications and oversaw more than 30 dissertations. He published many papers about various methodological and statistical aspects of the planning and analysis of studies in the field of clinical epidemiology. Here, the implementation of the newly developed statistical methods in clinical practice and therefore a close cooperation with various clinical partners was the focus of the research. [2]

Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao, FRS known as C R Rao is an Indian-American mathematician and statistician. He is currently professor emeritus at Pennsylvania State University and Research Professor at the University at Buffalo. Rao has been honoured by numerous colloquia, honorary degrees, and festschrifts and was awarded the US National Medal of Science in 2002. The American Statistical Association has described him as "a living legend whose work has influenced not just statistics, but has had far reaching implications for fields as varied as economics, genetics, anthropology, geology, national planning, demography, biometry, and medicine." The Times of India listed Rao as one of the top 10 Indian scientists of all time. Rao is also a Senior Policy and Statistics advisor for the Indian Heart Association non-profit focused on raising South Asian cardiovascular disease awareness.

Joseph L. Fleiss American mathematician

Joseph L. Fleiss was an American professor of biostatistics at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, where he also served as head of the Division of Biostatistics from 1975 to 1992. He is known for his work in mental health statistics, particularly assessing the reliability of diagnostic classifications, and the measures, models, and control of errors in categorization.

Sylvia Therese Richardson is a French/British Bayesian statistician and is currently Professor of Biostatistics and Director of the MRC Biostatistics Unit at the University of Cambridge. In 2021 she became the president of the Royal Statistical Society for the 2021-22 year.

Naihua Duan is a Taiwanese biostatistician specializing in mental health services and policy research at Columbia University. Duan is a professor of biostatistics with tenure in the Departments of Psychiatry and Biostatistics at Columbia University Medical Center, and a senior research scientist at NYSPI.

Nanny Wermuth is the Professor emerita of Statistics, Chalmers University of Technology/University of Gothenburg. Her research interests are Multivariate statistical models and their properties, especially graphical Markov models, as well as their applications in the life sciences and in the natural sciences.

Biometrical Journal covers statistical methods and their applications in life sciences including medicine, environmental sciences and agriculture. Typical articles contain both, the development of methodology and its application. At present, articles are accompanied on the publisher's web site by computer code and illustrative data sets for the sake of reproducible research. The code is checked by an appointed Reproducible Research Editor before it is published as supplementary material.

Marvin Zelen was Professor Emeritus of Biostatistics in the Department of Biostatistics at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (HSPH), and Lemuel Shattuck Research Professor of Statistical Science. During the 1980s, Zelen chaired HSPH's Department of Biostatistics. Among colleagues in the field of statistics, he was widely known as a leader who shaped the discipline of biostatistics. He "transformed clinical trial research into a statistically sophisticated branch of medical research."

Albert Vexler

Albert Vexler was born in Birobidzhan, The Jewish Autonomous Oblast, USSR on 23 September 1971. His Ph.D. degree in Statistics and Probability Theory was obtained from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 2003. His Ph.D. advisor was Marcy Bogen Professor, Fellow of the American Statistical Association. Vexler was a postdoctoral research fellow in the Biometry and Mathematical Statistics Branch at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Currently, Vexler is a tenured Full Professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo, Department of Biostatistics. Vexler has authored and co-authored various publications that contribute to both the theoretical and applied aspects of statistics. His papers and statistical software developments have appeared in statistical and biostatistical journals, which have the top rated impact factors and are historically recognized as the leading scientific journals. Vexler was awarded a National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant to develop novel nonparametric data analysis and statistical methodology. The results of this effort can be found via a public access resource housed by the US National Library of Medicine.

Susan Ruth Wilson was an Australian statistician, known for her research in biostatistics and statistical genetics, and for her work on the understanding of AIDS in Australia. She edited the bulletin of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics from 1993 to 1998, and was president of the International Biometric Society from 1998 to 1999.

Lisa Morrissey LaVange is Professor and Chair of the Department of Biostatistics in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she directs the department’s Collaborative Studies Coordinating Center (CSCC), overseeing faculty, staff, and students involved in large-scale clinical trials and epidemiological studies coordinated by the center. She returned to her alma mater in 2018 after serving as the director of the Office of Biostatistics in the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER). Her career also includes 16 years in non-profit research and 10 years in the pharmaceutical industry. She served as the 2007 president of the Eastern North American Region (ENAR) of the International Biometric Society (IBS), and as the 2018 American Statistical Association (ASA) president.

Maria-Pia Geppert was a German mathematician and biostatistician who co-founded the Biometrical Journal.


Susan S. Ellenberg is an American statistician specializing in the design of clinical trials and in the safety of medical products. She is a professor of biostatistics, medical ethics and health policy in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She was the 1993 president of the Society for Clinical Trials and the 1999 President of the Eastern North American Region of the International Biometric Society.

Hans van Houwelingen Dutch mathematician

Johannes Cornelis "Hans" van Houwelingen is a Dutch mathematician and a professor emeritus of medical statistics at Leiden University.

Gerta Rücker is a German statistician known for her expertise in meta-analysis, and in its application to studies of borderline personality disorder. She is a researcher in the Institute of Medical Biometry and Statistics at the University of Freiburg.

Lori E. Dodd American mathematical statistician

Lori Elizabeth Dodd is an American mathematical statistician specialized in clinical trials methodology, statistical analysis of genomic data, design of clinical trials using biomarkers and imaging modalities, and statistical methods for analyzing biomarkers. She is a statistician in the biostatistics research branch at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
