Martino da Canal was a 13th-century Venetian chronicler, whose only known work is the so-called Les estoires de Venise, a French chronicle of the history of Venice from its beginnings to 1275. It is particularly valuable for Canal's depiction of events during his own lifetime, particularly during the years 1267–1275, when he was at Venice.
Martino da Canal is not mentioned in any other source, and the only biographical information about him is what can be extracted from his work. [1] His date of birth and early life are entirely unknown. He was obviously familiar with Venice and its history, and certainly resided in the city itself between 1267 and 1275, when he composed his chronicle, as his account of these years is obviously that of an eyewitness. [1] It is possible that he was a minor public official, perhaps a scribe, on some Venetian board or magistrature, with the Tavola da Mar, a sort of maritime customs, the most likely candidate. [1] He may have had some close relationship with the Doge Reniero Zeno, to whom an extensive portion of his work is dedicated, including events before his election to the dogate. [1] The chronicle ends on September 1275, which is also the last date attested for his life. [1]
His sole known work was a chronicle of the Republic of Venice, from the city's foundation to 1275. Written in French, Canal titled it Cronique des Veniciens ("Chronicle of the Venetians"), but it is more commonly known under the title Les estoires de Venise. [1] The work is divided into two parts of more or less equal length, each with its own prologue. The first part of the work was written in 1267–1268, and was stopped after recounting the downfall of the Romano family in 1259, possibly due to the death of Zeno. [1] The second part of the work is more disjoined, and include two sections dedicated to the festivals of Venice and the parade in honour of Zeno's successor, Lorenzo Tiepolo. [1]
As his work is skewed towards events contemporary with his own life, Canal is certainly not a disinterested observer of remote events, but a partisan with a very clear, patriotic viewpoint. He defends the actions of the Venetians during and after the Fourth Crusade, trying to dispel the accusation that they had diverted it to Constantinople for their own benefit. [1] Domestically he appears a champion of order and the state's institutions, and supports the reconciliation of classes, particularly in the aftermath of the adverse impact on the Venetian economy of the reconquest of Constantinople by the Byzantines in 1261. [1]
Canal reused older sources for the early potions of his chronicle, but these are difficult to identify. He did include several original documents, however, such as the Partitio Romaniae of 1204 and a 1125 charter by Baldwin II of Jerusalem. His particular value lies in the events he himself witnessed, starting with the dogate of Jacopo Tiepolo. [1] The chronicle was known and relied on by the author of the unpublished early 14th-century chronicle of Marco, as well as by the Doge and chronicler Andrea Dandolo, who used it rather selectively in his compilation of Venetian history. [1] There is also some evidence that the 18th-century writer Giustiniana Wynne knew of the work, but otherwise it appears to have been buried in the commercial archives and not discovered again until the 19th century, when L. F. Polidori published its first edition in 1845. [1] Its modern editions are by Alberto Limentani, Les Estoires de Venise: Cronaca veneziana in lingua francese dalle origini al 1275 (Florence 1972), and an English translation by Laura K. Morreale, Martin da Canal, Les Estoires de Venise (Padova, 2009).
The Doge of Venice was the highest role of authority within the Republic of Venice. The word Doge derives from the Latin Dux, meaning "leader," originally referring to any military leader, becoming in the Late Roman Empire the title for a leader of an expeditionary force formed by detachments from the frontier army, separate from, but subject to, the governor of a province, authorized to conduct operations beyond provincial boundaries.
The Doge's Palace is a palace built in Venetian Gothic style, and one of the main landmarks of the city of Venice in northern Italy. The palace was the residence of the Doge of Venice, the supreme authority of the former Republic of Venice. It was built in 1340 and extended and modified in the following centuries. It became a museum in 1923 and is one of the 11 museums run by the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia.
Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, also known as GiambattistaTiepolo, was an Italian painter and printmaker from the Republic of Venice who painted in the Rococo style, considered an important member of the 18th-century Venetian school. He was prolific, and worked not only in Italy, but also in Germany and Spain.
Pietro Ziani was the 42nd Doge of Venice from 15 August 1205 to 1229, succeeding Enrico Dandolo. He was the son of Doge Sebastian Ziani of the very rich noble family. He was married to Maria Baseggio and Constance of Sicily.

Gregorio Lazzarini was an Italian painter of mythological, religious and historical subjects, as well as portraits. One of the most successful Venetian artists of the day, a prominent teacher, and father to a significant school of painting, he is best known for having first trained Giambattista Tiepolo, who joined his workshop in 1710 at the age of fourteen. His own style was somewhat eclectic.
Reniero Zeno was the 45th Doge of Venice, reigning from 1 January 1253 until his death in 1268.
Domenico Morosini was the thirty-seventh doge of the Republic of Venice, reigning from 1148 until his death in 1156.
Jacopo Tiepolo, also known as Giacomo Tiepolo, was Doge of Venice from 1229 to 1249. He had previously served as the first Venetian Duke of Crete, and two terms as Podestà of Constantinople, twice as governor of Treviso, and three times as ambassador to the Holy See. His dogate was marked by major domestic reforms, including the codification of civil law and the establishment of the Venetian Senate, but also against a mounting conflict with Emperor Frederick II, which broke into open war from 1237 to 1245.
Giovanni Soranzo was a Venetian statesman of the prominent Soranzo family who served as the 51st Doge of Venice. He ascended to the position on 13 July 1312 and served until his death. Soranzo was a member of a noble family; he was married to Franchesina. In 1310 his son-in-law, Niccolo' Querini was exiled for life from Venice for taking part in Bajamonte Tiepolo's conspiracy to overthrow the state. Soranzo was succeeded as Doge by Francesco Dandolo. He was also an Italian politician, diplomat and admiral.
Giovanni Antonio Moschini or Giannantonio Moschini was an Italian author and Roman Catholic Somascan priest. He was an art critic who wrote mainly about art and architecture in Venice and the Veneto.
The Podestà of Constantinople was the official in charge of Venetian possessions in the Latin Empire and the Venetian quarter of Constantinople during the 13th century. Nominally a vassal to the Latin Emperor, the Podestà functioned as a ruler in his own right, and answered to the Doge of Venice. The podestà was also officially known as Governor of One-Fourth and One-Half of the Empire of Romania and was entitled to wearing the crimson buskins as the emperors.
The Battle of Constantinople was a naval battle between the fleets of the Empire of Nicaea and the Republic of Venice that occurred in May–June 1241 near Constantinople.
The War of the Castle of Love was a conflict in 1215–1216 between Padua and Treviso on one side and Venice on the other. It began with an exchange of insults at a festival, escalated to raiding and finally to open warfare. The decisive engagement was fought near the mouth of the Adige on 22 October 1215 and a peace treaty was signed on 9 April 1216.
Jacopo Dondulo was a Venetian sailor, military commander, and politician in the 13th century. He played a distinguished role in the naval conflicts of the War of Saint Sabas against the Republic of Venice, leading the Venetian navy to a crushing victory at the Battle of Trapani in 1266. He served also several tenures as a member of the Great Council of Venice, as Bailo of Negroponte in 1277–1279, and as Duke of Candia in 1281–1283, where he faced the start of the Revolt of Alexios Kallergis.

The history of the Doge's palace in Venice begins in medieval times and continues with numerous extensions, renovations and demolitions aimed at adapting the building to the new needs of the city and in particular to the need to give a seat to the governing bodies that, increasing in number, began to complement the doge in the administration, depriving him of certain powers and decreasing the space at his disposal.
