The USS Bennington Monument is a 60-foot (18 m) granite obelisk in the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery,Point Loma,San Diego,California,United States. It serves as a memorial to the crew of the USS Bennington (PG-4),a gunboat of the United States Navy,whose boiler exploded on the morning of 21 July 1905,in San Diego Bay. The explosion showered the vessel with live steam and scalding water,killing 66 men and burning an additional 46. It was the worst peacetime disaster for the U.S. Navy up to that time.
Point Loma is a seaside community in San Diego,California,United States. Geographically it is a hilly peninsula that is bordered on the west and south by the Pacific Ocean,the east by San Diego Bay and Old Town,and the north by the San Diego River. Together with the Silver Strand/Coronado peninsula,the Point Loma peninsula defines San Diego Bay and separates it from the Pacific Ocean. The term "Point Loma" is used to describe both the neighborhood and the peninsula.
Naval Base Point Loma (NBPL) is a United States Navy base in Point Loma,a neighborhood of San Diego,California. It was established on 1 October 1998 when Navy facilities in the Point Loma area of San Diego were consolidated under Commander,Navy Region Southwest. Naval Base Point Loma consists of seven facilities:Submarine Base,Naval Mine and Anti-Submarine Warfare Command,Fleet Combat Training Center Pacific,Naval Information Warfare Systems Command (NAVWAR),Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific,the Fleet Intelligence Command Pacific and Naval Consolidated Brig,Miramar. These close-knit commands form a diverse and highly technical hub of naval activity. The on-base population is around 22,000 Navy and civilian personnel.
Silver Strand Training Complex (SSTC) is a training facility for U.S. Special Operations Forces. Located between Imperial Beach,California,and Silver Strand State Beach near San Diego. The area is part of Naval Base Coronado and commanded by that base's Commanding Officer. While just north of Imperial Beach,it is within the city limits of Coronado. The facility was known by locals as the "elephant cage" which is a nickname for the large wullenweber direction finder antenna. The antenna was used to provide direction finding,primary communication links for U.S. Navy submarines. The antenna was finally dismantled in 2015,even though it was scheduled to be removed in fiscal year 2007.

Alfred Walton Hinds was a United States Navy captain who served as the 17th Naval Governor of Guam. His early naval service included serving as Assistant Engineer aboard USS Texas,the United States Navy's first battleship,where he was reprimanded for an accident aboard in 1896. In 1911,Hinds joined the staff of the United States Naval Academy,heading the Department of Marine Engineering and Naval Construction,writing a textbook on the subject while there.
William Pigott Cronan was a United States Navy captain who served as the 19th Naval Governor of Guam. During his tenure in the Navy,he became decorated,commanded a number of ships,and came to be known as "the most popular man in the Navy". He participated in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish–American War. In 1903,he gained some attention for his participation in the rescue of a Venezuelan fisherman off the coast of La Guaira under bad conditions. Both the Venezuelan government and navy command praised him for the way he carried out the operation. He became a national news story in 1907 while serving aboard USS Connecticut during a training operation. When a gun nearly exploded because of leaking powder;he shoved his hand into the gun's breechblock,preventing the explosion and losing two of his fingers in the process.
Lawrence Fairfax Reifsnider was an American football player and a vice admiral in the United States Navy. A native of Westminster,Maryland,Reifsnider attended the United States Naval Academy where he played college football at the end position for the Navy Midshipmen football team. He was selected by Walter Camp in 1908 as a second-team All-American. He graduated in 1910 and was commissioned as an ensign on March 7,1912.
John Thaddeus Walker was a highly decorated officer of the United States Marine Corps,who reached the rank of lieutenant general. He is most noted as commanding officer of the 22nd Marine Regiment during Battle of Eniwetok. He later served as director of personnel or commanding general of Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego.
Stanley Emanuel Ridderhof was a highly decorated naval aviator of the United States Marine Corps with the rank of brigadier general. A veteran of many conflicts,Ridderhof enlisted in the Marine Corps during World War I and received commission soon after. He then served in Nicaragua and received Navy Cross,the United States military's second-highest decoration awarded for valor in combat. During World War II,he served various assignments in the Pacific theater and received Distinguished Flying Cross and other decorations.
Rear Admiral Walter Browne Woodson,U.S. Navy (Ret.) (1881-1948),was Judge Advocate General of the Navy under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt,serving from 1938 to 1943.
Sue Worthington Bradley was the American First Lady of Guam from 1929 to 1931. She was the wife of naval Governor of Guam Willis W. Bradley.
