Mary Louise Kisler MNZM is a New Zealand curator, author, art historian and Radio New Zealand art commentator. [1] [2] [3] She is best known for her publications which include Angels & Aristocrats: Early European Art in New Zealand Public Galleries (2010) [4] and Finding Frances Hodgkins (2019). [5]

She has been a curator at the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki since 1998 and is now the Senior Curator, Mackelvie Collection, International Art. [6] [7]

Biography

Kisler earned her master's degree in art history and Italian at the University of Auckland in 1994. [2] In 1996 she commenced a PhD at the University on Dis/Ordered Femininity in Italian Renaissance Art. [8]

Kisler's 2010 book Angels & Aristocrats: Early European Art in New Zealand Public Collections brings together artworks from the collections of five New Zealand galleries: Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu, Dunedin Public Art Gallery and Whanganui's Sarjeant Gallery. [9] A touring exhibition with a selection of works from Kisler's book travelled to museums and galleries around New Zealand. [10] [11]

In the 2021 Queen's Birthday Honours, Kisler was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to art history and curation. [12]

Frances Hodgkins New Zealand painter

Frances Mary Hodgkins was a New Zealand painter chiefly of landscape and still life, and for a short period was a designer of textiles. She was born and raised in New Zealand, but spent most of her working life in England. She is considered one of New Zealand's most prestigious and influential painters, although it is the work from her life in Europe, rather than her home country, on which her reputation rests.

Fiona Dorothy Pardington is a New Zealand artist, her principal medium being photography.

Frances Rutherford was a New Zealand artist and occupational therapist.

Molly Morell Macalister was a New Zealand artist. Known for painting, woodcarving, and sculpture, her work is held in the collection of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.

Marilynn Lois Webb was a New Zealand artist, noted for her contributions to Māori art and her work as an educator. She was best known for her work in printmaking and pastels, and her works are held in art collections in New Zealand, the United States, and Norway. She lectured at the Dunedin School of Art, and was made an emeritus principal lecturer in 2004.

Christine Webster is a New Zealand visual artist and photographer.

Rosanna Raymond is a New Zealand artist, poet, and cultural commentator and Raymond was recognised for "Pasifika artists practicing contemporary and heritage art forms in Aotearoa." Winning the Senior Pacific Artist Award Winner of 2018, through Creative New Zealand.

Julian Hooper is an Auckland-based artist. His art has been described as "an assemblage of metaphors, shapes and forms" that "details an eclectic and imaginative visual language that delves into his personal ancestry.".

Denis O'Connor is a New Zealand-based ceramicist, sculptor, and writer who has exhibited both in New Zealand and internationally.

Sandy Adsett New Zealand artist, curator, educator

Raymond Henry "Sandy" Adsett is a New Zealand visual artist and educator. Of Māori descent, he affiliates to Ngāti Kahungunu and Ngāti Pāhauwera. He is acknowledged for championing the art of kōwhaiwhai painting, creating a context for the artform within the development of contemporary Māori art.

Janet Lesley Bayly is a New Zealand photographer, museum director and curator and is an authority on the works of Frances Hodgkins. Her photographic works are held in the permanent collections of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, the Christchurch Art Gallery, and the Sarjeant Gallery.

Nigel John Floyd Borell is a New Zealand Māori artist, museum curator, and Māori art advocate. He curated the exhibition Toi Tū Toi Ora: Contemporary Māori Art at the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki in 2020, the largest exhibition since they opened. In 2021 the Art Foundation of New Zealand created an award to acknowledge the work of Borrell in this exhibition.
