Maryanne Ito is an American soul singer, songwriter, and performer based in Honolulu, Hawaii. [1] Blending genres such as neo soul, soul, hip hop, jazz, and R&B, [2] she has been writing and performing since 2006 and collaborating with musicians such as Slapp Symphony and DJ Bennie James. In 2014 she released her debut album Waking Up, which peaked at No. 4 on the UK Soul Chart. [3] [4] The album incorporates diverse styles, with Star Advertiser calling her voice "distinctive, sweet and sexy." [5]

She has toured Hawaii with The Astatine Collective as support, [3] and in the summer of 2015 she toured Europe, [6] performing at venues such as Radio6 in Amsterdam, Band on the Wall in Manchester, the Jazz Cafe in London, and Hare & Hounds in Birmingham. [6] In May 2015, Waking Up was named the Best R&B Album of the Year at the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, [7] and the following month Ito was named Best Pacific/ International Artist at the Pacific Music Awards. Biography

Early life and career

Maryanne Ito was born in 1983 in Fort Riley, Kansas. Of Japanese and Samoan descent, she was raised in California, American Samoa, and Honolulu, Hawaii. [1] In 2006 Ito served as a backup singer on a track for her elder brother Bless'd Chil', which attracted the attention of James Westbrook and led to Ito collaborating with the production duo called Slapp Symphony. They released the track "With You," with later became the lead single on Slapp Symphony's album Lands of the Lost, which won a Hawaii Music Award. [9] In 2009 she performed at the Hawaii Music Awards, and also had a television appearance on Living Local With The Baraquios. [1]

She continued writing songs that blended styles such as neo soul, jazz, R&B, hip hop, and neo-reggae, also performing about Hawaii. In 2011 she wrote "Waking Up," again produced by Slapp Sympphony, and also released the non-album single "Compare 2 U," a collaboration with Dyvon and Fool's Scholarship. Among other performances, in 2011 she opened for Blackstar at the Hawaii Theatre. [1] She opened for hip hop artist Jean Grae in 2012, and also performed at Queen Supreme, Poly Girls Rock, and The Hawaii Food Bank's Annual Hunger Walk. [1]

Ito performed at events such as Nesian Fest, Nesian Winter Groove, and the High Chief XL Memorial Salute in 2013, [1] and by that time she was touring with a backup band. [10] The group, dubbed The Astatine Collective, [1] consists of Freeze as DJ, Sub Z on MPC and audio engineering, Deesarono as a contributing vocalist, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist (drums, keyboards, and guitar), JT on bass, and King David on drums. [10] The group continued to tour with Ito into 2014, [1] and as of May 16, 2014, she had toured the Pacific Northwest of the United States. [9]

2014: Waking Up

Throughout the beginning of 2014 Ito continued to write for other artists, while also working on her debut album. [9] Engineered at Primaphonix Studio by DJ Sub-Zero, [2] a number of producers and sound engineers were brought in to help on her debut, [11] with several guest artists such as guitarist David Yamasaki contributing as well. [2] Titled Waking Up, an official release party for the album was held in April 2014, hosted by her long-term collaborator DJ Bennie James. [11] The official release took place in June, and the album peaked at No. 4 on the UK Soul Chart six weeks after being released. [3] On October 13, 2014, the album was still holding its position on the UK Soul Chart at No. 30. [4] John Berger of the Star Advertiser gave the album a positive review, [12] explaining that some of the tracks have "slow rhythms, introspective lyrics and heavy, solid bass lines." Berger also praised the timbre of her voice, calling it "distinctive, sweet and sexy." [5]

She toured Hawaii in support of the album, and in October 2014 she and local group The Astatine Collective performed at Hallowbaloo. [3] She was also a performer at the Great Chefs Fight Hunger Gala put on as a charity event by the Hawaii Food Bank on March 21, 2015. [13] On May 23, 2015, Waking Up was named the Best R&B Album of the Year at the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards. [7] On June 6, 2015, she performed live with a backing band for Hawaii Public Radio and a private audience at Atherton Studio. [14] Afterwards she took part in the Musicconnex tour of Europe, [15] with the Dutch acid-jazz band Tristan, [16] performing throughout June at venues [15] such as Bizz'Art in Paris, Radio6 and Sugar Factory in Amsterdam, Band on the Wall in Manchester, the Jazz Cafe in London, and Hare & Hounds in Birmingham. [6] On June 13, 2015, Ito was named Best Pacific/International Artist at the Pacific Music Awards. [8]

Personal life

As of 2014 Ito is based in her hometown of Honolulu. [10]

Eric Lee is a Hawaiian musician, singer, songwriter, and producer. His work has appeared on more than 30 albums, including his work with The Kanile'a Collection, Nā Kama, The Ka'ala Boys, The Mākaha Sons, and his solo albums, "Crossroads", "Kawehilani", and his Twentieth Anniversary Anthology.

The Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, occasionally called the Nā Hōkū Awards or Hoku Awards, are the premier music awards in Hawaii. They are considered to be Hawaii's equivalent of the Grammy Awards. "Nā Hōkū Hanohano" means "Stars of Distinction" in Hawaiian – "hōkū" means "star", "nā" makes it plural, and "hanohano" means "glorious, worthy of praises". The awards were founded in 1978 by radio personality Krash Kealoha of KCCN-AM, a radio station which focused on traditional Hawaiian music. He launched the first awards with the support of the owner of the radio station Sydney Grayson, and his fellow DJs Kimo Kaho‘āno and Jacqueline “Skylark” Rossetti.

Kimié Kauikeolani Miner better known as Kimié, is an Grammy Award nominated producer, American singer-songwriter and musician of Native Hawaiian and Portuguese descent. In November 2019 Miner earned her first Grammy Award nomination for the compilation album titled "Hawaiian Lullaby" as a producer along with producer Imua Garza. It was released in 2019 under her label Haku Collective. Hawaiian Lullaby was nominated in the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards under the Best Regional Roots Music Album category. Miner is an independent artist formerly managed by Kimo Kennedy of Arium Music and Kekoa Kapua of FR Management.

Keo Woolford was an American actor, producer, and director. He was born and raised in Hawaii. He directed the award-winning feature film The Haumāna and the East West Players stage play Three Year Swim Club. He starred in his self-written one-man show, I Land, and as the King of Siam in Rodgers and Hammerstein's The King and I at the London Palladium. He was a member of the Hawaii boyband Brownskin and the Hobo House on the Hill recording team responsible for the Grammy-nominated Island Warriors album. He was a recipient of the Na Hoku Hanohano Award for The Haumāna Soundtrack. His film and TV work included Godzilla, Act of Valor, The Haumāna, and Sergeant Detective Chang on Hawaii Five-0. He died on November 28, 2016, at Pali Momi Medical Center after suffering a stroke three days earlier.

Betty Loo Taylor was an American jazz pianist and musician, known as Hawaii's "First Lady of Jazz." She was the subject of the 2003 documentary, They Call Her Lady Fingers: The Betty Loo Taylor Story, by husband-and-wife filmmakers, Patricia Gillespie and Sam Polson.

Matt Sproat is a Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winning Hawaiian musician, singer, producer, and story-teller. He is a guitarist and singer with the Hawaiian music trio, Waipuna. He is the great-grandnephew of the legendary musician and story-teller Kindy Sproat, who was a 1988 NEA National Heritage Fellow.

Nāpua Greig

Jaye Nāpua Greig-Nakasone, known professionally as Nāpua Greig, is a Hawaiian musician, vocalist, songwriter, record producer, kumu hula, and educator from Maui, Hawaii. Known primarily for her contributions as kumu hula of Hālau Nā Lei Kaumaka O Uka, she arranges traditional Hawaiian music as well, performing and recording with instruments such as ukulele, ipu, and other traditional Hawaiian hula implements. She has released four solo albums, each earning a Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award.

Kalani Peʻa Hawaiian singer-songwriter

Kalani Peʻa is a two-time Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter of Hawaiian music. He released his first album, E Walea, in 2016, which won the 2017 Grammy award for "Best Regional Roots Music Album". Peʻa released his second album, No 'Ane'i, in 2018, which won the Grammy Award for Best Regional Roots Music Album at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards.

Robert Edward Lin Nelson was a Hawaiian songwriter, composer, pianist, and singer. He is best known for his most popular songs, "Hanalei Moon" and "Maui Waltz". He was also a staunch defender of the copyrights and royalties of Hawaiian songwriters and composers, and served on advisory boards at ASCAP for two decades. In 2013 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts.
