Masato Jones (born 1978) is a British-based fashion designer, who started his own label MASATO in 2011 after graduating from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. His collections have been showcased at several Fashion Weeks including in the UK: Brighton, Cheltenham, Essex, Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester, and also at Nürnberg in Germany.

Early life

Masato was born in Tokyo, Japan, where he grew up before training and qualifying as a hairdresser. After a visit to the UK Masato decided to move to Brighton, East Sussex, to learn English and subsequently made the decision that his future lay in fashion. [1]

Career

In 2005 Masato enrolled on a fashion degree at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. After passing his degree, Masato took an internship with Giles Deacon in September 2007 and was one of the creative pattern cutters in the team, taking a break from Giles for a season to be head designer at the London fashion label Ghost from October 2011 to April 2012. He has also worked with the designer Kinder Agguguni, and designed and created costumes for a promotional campaign for the English National Ballet. [2] Masato decided to set up his own haute couture label in 2011 which he launched at Essex Fashion Week, which was followed by Brighton Fashion Week 2 months later. [3] Masato has designed for the singer Beverley Knight MBE and he also teaches at Ravensbourne (College) in London [4]

Style and collections

His Spring/Summer 2013 collection was shown at the finale of Liverpool Fashion Week in October 2012 and Sameena Bruce subsequently praised the collection in the 'Style etc.' Magazine. [5] The collection was also shown at 'Fashion Days' in Nürnberg, Germany in February 2013 [6] and he was the showcase designer at the finale of the 'Cheltenham Fashion Week' in April. [7]

Masato opened the Leeds Fashion Show 'Dress Me Beautiful MMXIII' event in October 2013 where he showcased his Spring 2014 collection [8] and was subsequently the personal favourite on a list of notable designers from the event [9]

His new store opened in Thornton's Arcade Leeds in May 2021. [10]

Masato has collaborated with the UK couture jewellery designer LATIMER. [11]

Willi Donnell Smith was an American fashion designer. At the time of his death, Smith was regarded as one of the most successful African-American designers in the fashion industry. His company, WilliWear Limited, launched in 1976 and by 1986 grossed over $25 million in sales. After Smith's death, his business partner, Laurie Mallet, continued the line with various designers creating collections. Without Smith, the company floundered and due to financial problems and poor sales, WilliWear Limited ceased production in 1990. WilliWear was the first clothing company to create womenswear and menswear under the same label. The accessibility and affordability of Smith's clothing helped to democratize fashion.

Boston Fashion Week is a week-long luxury clothing event that takes place annually in Boston, United States. Fashion Week allows for international and local designers to showcase their creations to the general public, buyers, celebrities, and fashion experts. The event was established in the city by Jay Calderin in 1995. It faced a few setbacks in the early years, but is now increasing its popularity and importance, as Boston becomes a more fashion forward city. Accessibility and diversity in programming allow the public to engage the week on many levels; experiencing a show, taking in an exhibit, participating in an educational program or joining in the festivities at a party. The week also contributes to a sense of civic pride about what the region has to offer and how it continues to evolve.

Maison Margiela, formerly Maison Martin Margiela, is a French luxury fashion house founded by Belgian designer Martin Margiela and Jenny Meirens in 1988 and headquartered in Paris. The house produces both haute couture-inspired artisanal collections and ready-to-wear collections, with the former influencing the designs of the latter. Product lines include womenswear, menswear, jewellery, footwear, accessories, leather goods, perfumes and household goods. Known for deconstructive and avant-garde designs with unconventional materials, Maison Margiela has traditionally held live shows in unusual settings, for example empty metro stations and street corners. Models' faces are often obscured by fabric or long hair to direct attention to the clothes and design. Margiela resigned as creative designer in 2009 and John Galliano was appointed to the role in 2014.
