Masobe Books is an independent Nigerian publishing company. It was founded in 2018 by Nigerian author Othuke Ominiabohs and has since become one of the leading publishers of contemporary African writing on the continent. [1] [2]

Masobe is a word derived from the Isoko Language of the Isoko people who hail from the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. It means 'Let Us Read'. [1] The first book published under Masobe Books was Othuke Ominiabohs's debut novel, Odufa. Other imprints of Masobe Books include Makere and Oremaha [3]

Background

Masobe Books was founded in April 2018 by Nigerian author, Othuke Ominiabohs, citing a dream to support writers, significantly improve readership, and possibly revolutionize publishing in the Nigerian environment. [2]

Masobe Books tackles the typical challenges in Nigerian literature, which include poor distribution and marketing; mediocre production, especially for self-published books; readers' apathy and skepticism; and writers' disillusionment with securing commensurate publication, reward, and exposure for their work. [4]

Masobe Books is the publisher of Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani's debut novel, I Do Not Come To You By Chance , in Nigeria. [5] The novel set in the world of Nigerian email scams, tells the story of a young man, Kingsley, who turns to his Uncle Boniface for help in bailing his family out of poverty.

Ifeoma Okoye is a Nigerian novelist. She has been referred to by fans as "the most important female novelist from Nigeria after Flora Nwapa and Buchi Emecheta," according to Oyekan Owomoyela. She was born in Anambra State in Eastern Region, Nigeria. She went to school at St. Monica's College in Ogbunike to receive a teaching certificate in 1959. She then graduated from the University of Nigeria in Nsukka to earn a Bachelor of Arts honours degree in English in 1977. She wrote novels including Behind the Clouds, children's novels and short stories, such as The Village Boy and Eme Goes to School.

Bibi Bakare-Yusuf Hon. FRSL is a Nigerian academic, writer and editor from Lagos, Nigeria. She co-founded the publishing company Cassava Republic Press in 2006, in Abuja with Jeremy Weate. Cassava Republic Press was created with a focus on affordability, the need to find and develop local talent, and to publish African writers too often celebrated only in Europe and America. Bakare-Yusuf was elected an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2019, as well as having been selected as a Yale World Fellow, a Desmond Tutu Fellow and a Frankfurt Book Fair Fellow.

Parrésia, also Parrésia Publishers Ltd, is a publishing company in Nigeria founded by Azafi Omoluabi Ogosi and Richard Ali in 2012 with the aim of selling books to the Nigerian reading audience and promote the freedom of the imagination and the free press. Damilare Oluwasegun known by his stage name Asiricomedy, is a Nigerian comedian, author, and speaker. He is the founder of the Humorality Club, a hub for budding comic talents. In 2021, Damilare was enlisted as one of the Top 100 Nigerian Youth Leaders for the Royal African Young Leadership Forum (RAYLF) by His Imperial Majesty, Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi.
