The 1942 Massachusetts gubernatorial election was held on November 3, 1942. Republican incumbent Leverett Saltonstall defeated Democrat Roger Putnam, Communist candidate Otis A. Hood, Socialist candidate Joseph Massidda, Socialist Labor candidate Henning A. Blomen, and Prohibition candidate Guy S. Williams.

Leverett Saltonstall politician and United States Army officer

Leverett A. Saltonstall was an American lawyer and politician from Massachusetts. He served three two-year terms as the 55th Governor of Massachusetts, and for more than twenty years as a United States Senator (1945–1967). Saltonstall was internationalist in foreign policy and moderate on domestic policy, serving as a well-liked mediating force in the Republican Party. He was the only member of the Republican Senate leadership to vote for the censure of Joseph McCarthy.

Roger Lowell Putnam was an American politician and businessman. A member of the prominent Lowell family of Boston, he served as Mayor of Springfield, Massachusetts, from 1937 until 1943, and as director of the Economic Stabilization Administration from 1951 until 1952. During his short tenure in federal office, the nation's steelworkers struck—leading United States President Harry S. Truman to seize the nation's steel mills.

Henning A. Blomen was a candidate for United States President of the Socialist Labor Party of America in 1968 and for Vice President in 1964. Blomen was also an unsuccessful candidate for Governor of Massachusetts 14 times. According to his obituary in the Boston Globe, Henning advocated a bloodless revolution, abolishment of capitalism and the establishment of a socialist industrial republic.

Springfield is a city in the state of Massachusetts, United States, and the seat of Hampden County. Springfield sits on the eastern bank of the Connecticut River near its confluence with three rivers: the western Westfield River, the eastern Chicopee River, and the eastern Mill River. As of 2017, the estimated population was 154,758, making it the third-largest city in Massachusetts, the fourth-most populous city in New England after Boston, Worcester, and Providence, and the 12th-most populous in the Northeastern United States. Metropolitan Springfield, as one of two metropolitan areas in Massachusetts, had a population of 692,942 as of 2010.

Francis E. Kelly was an American politician who served as a member of the Boston City Council from 1930–1933, the 53rd Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts from 1937 to 1939 and Massachusetts Attorney General from 1949-1953.
