The 1998 Massachusetts gubernatorial election was held on November 3, 1998. Acting Governor Paul Cellucci was elected to his first term as Governor of Massachusetts.
Argeo Paul Cellucci was an American politician and diplomat from Massachusetts. A Republican, he served in the House of Representatives and Senate of Massachusetts before being elected the state's lieutenant governor, a position he held from 1991 to 1997 under Governor Bill Weld.
The Governor of Massachusetts is the head of the executive branch of the Government of Massachusetts and serves as commander-in-chief of the Commonwealth's military forces. The current governor is Charlie Baker.

In 2010, Malone ran for the Republican nomination for Congress in Massachusetts's 10th congressional district. In 2013, he announced he was leaving the Republican party to become an Independent. Joe Malone is a frequent contributor for Fox 25 as a political analyst.

After Harshbarger's primary victory, many moderate Democrats who had voted for McGovern or Donnelly, chose to support the socially liberal, fiscally moderate Cellucci instead of the more liberal Harshbarger. [8] [9]
In a January opinion poll, Cellucci lead Harshbarger 50%-30%. By August, Harshbarger had taken a 37%-35% lead over Cellucci. [10]
On November 3, Cellucci defeated Harshbarger by 65,317 votes. [11]
