Massive Scar Era is an Egyptian alternative metal collaborative project that was founded by Egyptian songwriter, singer, and guitarist Cherine Amr in 2004 [1] in Alexandria, Egypt. The band's music is characterized by a distinctive fusion of metal, progressive rock, and punk, with elements of traditional Egyptian music. [2] MSE's sound is largely defined by Cherine's vocals, [3] [4] which often incorporate metal growling and incorporating Egyptian scales.

Career

Amr had become interested in Western heavy metal in the late 1990s, when the genre became popular in Egypt even though the police were known to round up fans for harsh questioning. She formed Massive Scar Era with Suzie and Sarah Kasrway. [5] They released their debut EP Reincarnation in 2006. [6] The band immediately gained notice for its female membership, often with criticism from family members and religious authorities; [5] these struggles were mentioned in the internationally released book Heavy Metal Islam by Mark Levine in 2008. [7] The band has also faced difficulty in finding gigs and record distributors in their home region due to popular disdain for aggressive music. [6]

The Reincarnation EP gained international recognition, and the band was invited to play the Sweden Rock Festival in 2009. [8] In 2010 they were featured in the Egyptian film Microphone, [9] [10] covering Alexandria's arts and music scene. Starting in 2011 the band began to play at European summer music festivals regularly. [11] In 2013 Massive Scar Era was featured in the film Before the Spring, After the Fall, which depicted the participation of Egypt's rock musicians in that country's 2011 revolution. [12] Cherine Amr moved to Canada in 2015 to escape her home country's criticism and harassment toward her music. [13] Following her immigration, Cherine Amr's creative vision for Massive Scar Era evolved to become a collaborative project, where she invites a diverse group of musicians to contribute to the band's sound and bring her vision to life. This approach differs from having a fixed band membership, enabling the band to explore and experiment with various musical styles and influences while keeping the core element of the project's identity intact. In 2018, Massive Scar Era released the EP Color Blind. [15] In 2020, Cherine Amr adopted the name Cheen and released the folk-oriented solo single "Esmi". [13]

Corrosion of Conformity is an American heavy metal band from Raleigh, North Carolina, formed in 1982. The band has undergone multiple lineup changes throughout its existence, with lead guitarist Woody Weatherman as the sole constant member. Weatherman, founding bassist Mike Dean, founding drummer Reed Mullin and vocalist/rhythm guitarist Pepper Keenan are widely regarded as its "classic" lineup. Watchtower is an American progressive metal band based in Austin, Texas, active from 1982 to 1993 and they have reunited occasionally since 1999. The band has released two studio albums―Energetic Disassembly (1985) and Control and Resistance (1989)―as well as one compilation album, four digital singles, one EP and three demo cassettes, and has been featured on numerous compilation albums. They are also notable for featuring vocalist Jason McMaster, who left Watchtower after the release of Energetic Disassembly to form Dangerous Toys, and was replaced by Alan Tecchio, who appeared on Control and Resistance and the band's 2016 EP Concepts of Math: Book One. After leaving the band once again in 2010, McMaster returned to Watchtower for the second time in 2023.

Harm's Way is an American hardcore punk band from Chicago, Illinois, formed in 2006. The band started as a side project, but ended up becoming a more serious and full-time band in their later years. Harm's Way has since released four studio albums: Reality Approaches (2009), Isolation (2011) and Rust (2015) and several EPs. On February 9, 2018, the band released their critically acclaimed Metal Blade Records debut, titled Posthuman. They have been recognized for their unique blend of metal, industrial, and hardcore music.

Panopticon is an American black metal band founded by Austin Lunn in Louisville, Kentucky in 2007. Their most recent album The Rime Of Memory was released on November 29, 2023. The band's music has been described as "wrenching in its intensity but also sweeping and spectacular" and "ideologically open-minded and musically progressive, tackling issues around self-identity, ecology, religion and politics." Lunn's lyrical style has also been noted as "natural, organic, and methodical, masterful in its writing, fiery and alive in its execution."

Performing as a power trio, the band originated from the movement in the 2010s spearheading the resurgence of traditional, old-school heavy metal. The band tours extensively, and regularly performs at venues and heavy metal festivals all around the world.

Hällas are a Swedish progressive rock band formed in 2011 in Jönköping, Småland, by Jesper Nodbrant, Tommy Alexandersson and Kasper Eriksson. Currently based in Linköping, Östergötland, they play a blend of progressive rock, hard rock and heavy metal inspired by 1970s bands, resulting in a genre that they call "adventure rock".
