Mathews Mar Barnabas (9 August 1924 – 9 December 2012) was a Metropolitan of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. [1]

Early life

Mathews Mar Barnabas was born as one of a set of twins to Kuruvilla and Mariamma, a couple of the Kidangethu Thompra family in Kallarackaparampil house at Valayanchirangara. [2] In his childhood he was called Mathukutty. At the age of seven, Mathukutty determined to become a monk and started to practice with vegetarian food. Mathukutty and his twin brother used to stay in the Gathsemon Dayara monastery at Piramadam, near Muvattupuzha during their vacation and experienced the monastic life under the guidance of their uncle Fr K.P. Paulose.

Mathukutty's grandfather and uncle were Orthodox priests.

Education

He studied Biology from Madras Christian College and while serving, the parish in Secunderabad he did his masters in Botany in Osmania University. He began his theological studies under the guidance of his uncle Fr K. P. Paulose. In 1949 he joined the Orthodox Theological Seminary as a special student and studied Syriac for two years. While he was the vicar of the Calcutta parish, he studied in the Bishop's College, Calcutta and earned his B. D. degree from the Serampore University, as an external student.

Career

Catholicos Baselios Geevarghese II ordained him as a deacon in 1943, at his home parish, St Peter and St Paul Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, Valayanchirangara, Kerala, India. In 1951 Metropolitan Augen Mar Thimotheos ordained him to the priesthood.

As a deacon, he was a teacher at Kurppumpady M.G. M. High School in 1947. He taught there for two years and continued to teach for another two years at the MD Seminary High School, Kottayam, until he was ordained to priesthood. He also was a lecturer in the Orthodox Theological Seminary at Kottayam from 1967 to 1972. During this period he was the resident faculty member at the seminary and full-time warden. He also served as chaplain in the Kolenchery Medical Mission Hospital from 1972-1978.

Ordination as Metropolitan

Malankara Association held in 1977 elected Fr K. K. Mathews as a metropolitan of the church. On 15 May 1978, Baselios Mar Thoma Mathews I consecrated him as bishop at Pazhanji Church, with the ecclesiastical title Mathews Mar Barnabas and appointed as assistant bishop of the Angamaly and Kottayam Dioceses. [3] In 1982 he was appointed as the metropolitan of the newly formed Idukki Diocese. In 1992/93, Mathews Mar Barnabas was appointed as the diocesan metropolitan of the undivided American Diocese.

Retirement

On 18 January 2011, the Catholicos of The East and Malankara Metropolitan, H.H.Baselius Mar Thoma Paulose II, accepted Mathews Mar Barnabas' request to be relieved from administrative responsibilities as diocesan metropolitan of the Northeast American Diocese. Mathews Mar Barnabas left the United States on 25 th of May 2011.

Death

Mathews Mar Barnabas was admitted to Pushpagiri Hospital, Thiruvilla (Kerala) for a pain-related issue. He died at around 3:15 AM (Indian Standard Time) on 9 December 2012, and was buried at St Peter's and St Paul's Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, Valayanchirangara, Perumbavoor, Kerala, India.

Malankara Metropolitan Historical title in Indian Christianity

Malankara Metropolitan was a legal title given to the head of the Malankara Church Nasrani Christians, by the Government of Travancore and Cochin in South India. This title was awarded by a proclamation from the King of Travancore and the King of Cochin. The Prime jurisdiction regarding the temporal, ecclesiastical and spiritual administration of the Malankara Church is vested in the Malankara Metropolitan, who oversees its faithful from the Apostolic See of Saint Thomas. There are two churches that claim the Throne of St Thomas and hence the title of Malankara Metropolitan. Marthoma Paulos the Second who was affirmed by the Supreme court of India as the Malankara Metropolitan in the verdict pertaining to the asset dispute with the Jacobite Syrian Church. On the other hand, the titles in relation to "Malankara Metropolitan", "Metropolitan of Malabar", "Malankara Syrian Metropolitan", "Mar Thoma Metropolitan" were used by the head of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church since 1894.

Didymos I 20th Malankara Metropolitan and 7th Catholicos of the Malankara Church

Baselios Marthoma Didymus I born C. T. Thomas was the 7th Catholicos of the East since the Catholicate of the East was relocated to India and the 20th Malankara Metropolitan from 2005 to 2010. He was 117th in the lineage of Catholicos of the East in the Apostolic throne of St. Thomas and 7th Catholicate of East.

Baselios Paulose II was the first Maphrian of the Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church.

Jacobite Syrian Christian Church Oriental Orthodox Church based in Kerala

The Jacobite Syrian Christian Church (JSCC), also known as the Malankara Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, the Jacobite Syrian Church, or the Syriac Orthodox Church of India, is an autonomous Oriental Orthodox church based in the Indian state of Kerala, and is an integral branch of the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch. It recognizes the Syriac Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, Ignatius Aphrem II is Supreme Head of the church. It functions as a largely autonomous unit within the church, under the authority of the Catholicos of India, Thomas I. Currently, this is the only church in Malankara which has a direct relationship with the Syriac Christians of Antioch, which has continued from after the schism and it continues to employ the West Syriac Rite Liturgy of Saint James.

Mor Themotheos Thomas is the Metropolitan of Kottayam Diocese and Secretary to the Holy Episcopal Synod of the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church. Mor Themotheos Thomas was ordained as the Metropolitan of the Outside Kerala Diocese on 3 January 1991 by Mor Baselios Paulose II Catholicos of the East .

Baselios Paulose I or Murimattathil Bava was the first Catholicos of the East after its reinstatement in India. The First Catholicos of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church was in power only for seven months and eighteen days. He was 76 years old when he became the Catholiocs and died the following year.He was the 111th Successor to the Holy Apostolic Throne of St.Thomas.

Geevarghese Dionysius of Vattasseril Indian Christian saint and Malankara Metropolitan

Saint Geevarghese Mar Dionysius of Vattasseril popularly known as Vattasseril Thirumeni, born Geevarghese was the 15th Malankara Metropolitan (primate) of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church (MOSC) and he was the 110th Successor to the Holy Apostolic Throne of St.Thomas. Vattasseril Geevarghese Mar Dionysius is popularly known as "Malankara Sabha Bhasuran", a title which the Church bestowed on him in recognition of his contribution to Malankara Church. Athanasius Paulose 19th and 20th-century Jacobite Syrian patriarch


Athanasius Paulose, popularly known as 'Valiya Thirumeni', was the Metropolitan bishop of the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church for nearly four decades. He is now referred to as Saint Athanasius.

Mathews Mar Thimothios is the Metropolitan of UK, Europe and Africa Diocese and Assistant Metropolitan of Chenganoor Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church.

Geevarghese Mar Philoxenos

Geevarghese Mar Philoxenos aka Puthencavil Kochu Thirumeni was an administrator, orator and an advocate of Orthodox and the Catholicate of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of India. He served as Metropolitan of Thumpamon Diocese from 1930 to 1951.

The position of Priest Trustee in the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church is of paramount importance in the administration of the Church, together with the Malankara Metropolitan and the lay trustee. The priest trustee is a priest of order Kasheesha or Cor-Episcopa.
