Mats Olof Foyer (born 3 November 1954) was the ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden accredited to and resident in the People's Democratic Republic of Korea (North Korea), a position he held 2005-2010. [1] [2]
Foyer has an LL.B. and BA from the University of Stockholm and speaks Swedish, English, Russian and French. [1]
From 2002-2005 Foyer was minister in charge of political affairs at the Swedish Embassy in Beijing. Foyer has served in other posts including: [1]
At home in Sweden he worked at the Russian desk at Sweden’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. [1]
Foyer was involved in the talks to release American journalists held in North Korea. He met with the journalists several times while they were held. The government of Sweden represents the United States in North Korea in lieu of an American embassy. [3] [4]
Cyprus is a member of the United Nations along with most of its agencies as well as the Commonwealth of Nations, World Bank, International Monetary Fund and Council of Europe. In addition, the country has signed the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency Agreement (MIGA). The Republic of Abkhazia is a partially recognized state in the South Caucasus that declared independence from Georgia during the War in Abkhazia (1992–1993). At the time, the Soviet Union had only just recently collapsed. Since 1992, Abkhazia has sought recognition as a sovereign state from the international community. Abkhazia is considered by most of the international community to be a part of Georgia.
On March 17, 2009, North Korean soldiers detained two American journalists, Euna Lee and Laura Ling, who were working for the U.S. independent cable television network Current TV, after they crossed into North Korea from China without a visa. They were found guilty of illegal entry and sentenced to twelve years' hard labor in June 2009. North Korean leader Kim Jong-il pardoned the two on August 5, 2009, the day after former U.S. President Bill Clinton arrived in the country on a publicly unannounced visit.
