Matt Lynch is a college basketball coach. In 2023 he created from scratch the University of South Carolina Salkehatchie men's basketball team.

Early life and education

Lynch is from Erie, Pennsylvania. [2] He is the son of Irma and Bill Lynch; his father played basketball in college. [1] He has a brother and a sister. [3] He played basketball in high school at Fort Leboeuf High School in Waterford, Pennsylvania. [3]

He attended Edinboro University, graduating in 2013 with a bachelor's degree in Health and Education. [2] He graduated in 2015 from Miami University with a master's degree in Kinesiology and Sports Psychology. [2]

Career

Lynch first worked as an assistant coach at Fort Leboeuf during his freshman year in college. [4] [3] He then started working in the basketball program at Edinboro while attending school there. [3]

Lynch worked at Miami, starting as video coordinator and later working as interim assistant coach for the women's basketball team, and then moved to the men's program at Youngstown State as director of basketball operations under Jerry Slocum. [5] He worked as video coordinator, then director of basketball operations and then assistant for University of North Carolina Wilmington under C. B. McGrath until March 2020; he and the rest of the team staff were let go after three losing seasons. [1] [5] He worked as an assistant coach at Chowan University. [2]

In December 2022 Lynch was hired by Salkehatchie. The team had been disbanded prior to that year's season after having four head coaches leave within an eight-month period; the team had no players signed, no games scheduled, and no budget. [1] [6] [7] Lynch rebuilt the team from scratch with an all-freshman roster, including Grayson Kirk, an All-State guard. [1] [6] [3] Salkehatchie had a winning season in 2023-2024. [1] [6]

Recognition

In 2021 Lynch was named to Forbes ' "30 Under 30" list of sportspeople. [8]

Personal life

As of 2024 Lynch was the only out gay head coach in college men’s basketball. [1]

Kruger then played professional basketball from 2007 to 2013, including multiple stints with NBA Development League teams Utah Flash and Los Angeles D-Fenders.

The junior varsity basketball team at the University of North Carolina is a two-year program that gives non-scholarship students the opportunity to continue their basketball careers at the collegiate level. Tryouts for the J.V. team occur every year prior to the beginning of basketball season in October. Players are only allowed to play on the J.V. team for two years and then they are given a chance to try out for the varsity team as a walk-on. With a valid physical examination, any student that attends the university can try out for the J.V. team. The J.V. team is coached by assistant varsity coaches, who are given the opportunity to gain head coaching experience while fulfilling their assistant duties at the varsity level. Hubert Davis, prior to his promotion to head coach for the varsity team, was the head coach of the J.V. team. Since the COVID-19 pandemic shut down sports in spring 2020, the J.V. team has not competed, putting a pause on one of the most cherished traditions in Chapel Hill. The team did not return for the 2021–22 season, and instead tryouts were held to add walk-ons to the varsity team, due to the continued need for COVID-19 safety protocols.
