Matthew "Matt" R. Murphy is an American politician who served as Mayor of Valparaiso,Indiana from 2020 to 2024. [1] [2]
Matt Murphy was born and grew up in Valparaiso,Indiana. His father was an elected official of Porter County,Indiana who served as the county's treasurer and auditor. He attended Valparaiso High School and received his MBA at Valparaiso University after the tail of his undergraduate years at Indiana University. [1]
Under Murphy's administration,772 solar panels were installed on several of Valparaiso's city facilities. [3] Valparaiso won Indiana's Green Project of 2023.
In 2020,Murphy and his wife spread misinformation and conspiracy theories about the Covid-19 virus.
Murphy oversaw the hostile takeover of several Downtown Valparaiso businesses,forcing longtime establishments to close their doors. This was to make room for a new private development of expensive,upscale housing (The Linc),along with a new restaurant across the street belonging to his predecessor and successor,Mayor Jon Costas. Private developers were awarded contracts,and public sentiment turned against the project before Murphy announced he would not be seeking re-election.

The South Shore Line is an electrically powered interurban commuter rail line operated by the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) between Millennium Station in downtown Chicago,Illinois and the South Bend International Airport in South Bend,Indiana,United States. The name refers to both the physical line and the service operated over that route. The line was built in 1901–1908 by predecessors of the Chicago South Shore and South Bend Railroad,which continues to operate freight service. Passenger operation was assumed by the NICTD in 1989,who also purchased the track in 1990. The South Shore Line is one of the last surviving interurban trains in the United States. In 2023,the system had a ridership of 1,406,900,or about 6,300 per weekday as of the third quarter of 2024.
The Calumet,also commonly called the Valpo Local,was a 43.6-mile (70.2 km) passenger train route operated by Amtrak between Chicago and Valparaiso,Indiana. Despite Amtrak's mandate to provide only intercity service,the Calumet was a commuter train. Transferred from Conrail in 1979,the full route was shared with Amtrak's Broadway Limited until 1990;the Calumet was discontinued the next year.
The Athletics–Recreation Center,also known as the ARC,is a 5,000-seat multi-purpose arena on the campus of Valparaiso University in Valparaiso,Indiana,United States. It serves as the home court for Valparaiso Beacons men's and women's basketball teams as well as the volleyball team. It opened in 1984 as an addition to Hilltop Gym,the oldest parts of which date to 1939.

The Valparaiso University Law School was the law school of Valparaiso University,a private university in Valparaiso,Indiana. Founded in 1879,the school was accredited by the American Bar Association in 1929 and admitted to the Association of American Law Schools in 1930. In October 2016,the ABA censured the school for admitting applicants who did not appear capable of satisfactorily completing the school's program of legal education and being admitted to the bar.
