Matthew Russell (born 1 October 1972) is an Australian former representative lightweight rower. He was a two time Australian national champion, and won a bronze medal at the 2000 World Rowing Championships.
Raised in Ballarat, Victoria Russell was educated at Ballarat Clarendon College where he took up rowing. His senior club rowing was from the Wendouree Ballarat Rowing Club where he was a committee man from 1992 to 1997. [1] In the 2002 season he rowed from the Huon Rowing Club in Tasmania.
Rusell first rowed at the Interstate Regatta within the Australian Rowing Championships in 1996 in a Victorian lightweight four which contested and won the Penrith Cup. [1] He rowed in further lightweight fours for Victoria in 1997, 2000 and 2002. [1]
In 1997 in an all-Ballarat crew he won the national lightweight coxless four title at the Australian Rowing Championships. [1]
Russell made his first Australian representative appearance in 1994 in a lightweight four which competed at the 1994 Nations Cup. That same year he was selected in an Australian lightweight four which contested an U23 Trans-Tasman series against New Zealand crews. [2]
He made his Australian senior representative debut in 1999 in a lightweight pair at the World Rowing Cup II in Vienna. . [3] The next year he gained a seat in the Australian lightweight men's eight. They rowed to first place at the World Rowing Cup III in Lucerne and then at the 2000 World Rowing Championships in Zagreb, they took the bronze medal. [3] In the heat they finished second behind the eventual gold medallists USA and won the repechage by half a length. In the final the Australians finished third behind a comfortable USA followed by the British crew who had won their heat easily. [4]
By 2002 Russell had relocated to Tasmania to further his representative aspirations. He came back into Australian contention in a lightweight pair with Tasmanian Shane Broad. They competed at the World Rowing Cup III in Munich finishing fifth and then at the 2002 World Rowing Championships in Seville where they finished in overall ninth place. [3] It was Russell's last Australian representative appearance. [3]

Anthony John Edwards is an Australian former lightweight rower. He is a five time Olympian, triple Olympic medallist, a world champion and a six-time Australian national champion. He represented Australia at the premier world regattas consistently over a twenty-year period from 1993 to 2012.
Michael Toon is an Australian rowing coxswain. He is a former Australian national champion, an U23 world champion, an Olympian and a medallist at world championships and the 2004 Olympics.
Darren Bruce Balmforth is an Australian former lightweight rower. He was a twelve-time Australian national champion, a world champion and an Olympic silver medallist.
Matthew Long is an Australian former Olympian rower. He was an Australian national champion, a representative at World Championships and won a bronze medal in the coxless pair at Sydney 2000
Simon Burgess is an Australian national champion, two-time World Champion, three-time Olympian and dual Olympic silver medal-winning lightweight rower. He represented Australia ten times at World Rowing Championships between 1990 and 2002. He won world and national championships in both sculls and in sweep-oared boat classes during an eighteen-year elite level career.
Paul Reedy is an Australian former rower. He is a dual Olympian, an Olympic and Commonwealth Games silver medalist who competed over a seventeen-year period at the elite level. He was a fourteen-time Australian national champion across both sculling and sweep-oared boats and then coached six Australian crews to national championship titles. He later coached at the London Rowing Club and was appointed as British national Head Coach from 2009. He took Great Britain's lightweight women's sculling crews to Olympic and World Championship gold medals in 2012 and 2016.
Robert Richards is an Australian former lightweight rower. He is a former world champion, an Olympic silver medallist and a national champion. In the four years he rowed for Australia at the premier world regatta he won a medal each time.
Rebecca Susan Joyce is an Australian former rower, a sculler in the lightweight division. She was a five-time national champion, a 1995 world champion and Olympic medal winner.
Rachael Taylor is an Australian former rower - a national champion and an Olympic and world championship medalist.
Samuel Beltz is an Australian former lightweight rower. He is a 16-time national champion, a world champion and dual Olympian. He competed at the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics and represented Australia at the premier world class regattas over a fifteen-year period from 1999 to 2014.
Haimish John Karrasch is an Australian former rower. He was a nine-time Queensland state representative, an eight-time Australian national champion, a dual Olympian and won a silver medal at the 1999 World Rowing Championships.

Paul Francis Rowe was an Australian representative rower and elite level rowing coach. He was an eight-time Australian national champion in both sweep oared and sculling boats across both lightweight and open divisions. He was Australia's lightweight sculling representative at the 1975 World Rowing Championships. He coached scullers and crews to three Australia national title wins and to world championships and to Commonwealth and Olympic Games.
