Matthew White (born 1973) is a Canadian countertenor.
Born in Ottawa, Ontario, White began singing as a treble with St Matthew's Men and Boys Choir in Ottawa and studied with Jan Simons in Montreal, Quebec. He graduated in English Literature from McGill University. [1]
He and four other musicians created the ensemble Les Voix Baroques in 1999, specialising in Baroque and Renaissance material.
He has sung with Glyndebourne Festival Opera, New York City Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Cleveland Opera, and Opera Atelier. On June 9, 2003, White sang the roles of Evanthes and Bacchus in the first performance in modern times of Johann Georg Conradi's 1691 opera Ariadne at the Boston Early Music Festival. The studio recording with the same cast received a Grammy nomination for Best Opera Recording of 2005. [1]
White was an active soloist in oratorio and on the concert stage, where he specialises in Baroque music. He has appeared at the Vancouver, Boston, and Utrecht Early Music Festivals and has sung with Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, Boston's Handel and Haydn Society, Les Violons du Roy, and Les Voix Humaines. In December 2010, he will sing in Handel's Messiah with Boston Baroque, a leading period instrument ensemble under the direction of Martin Pearlman. He is also the musical director and soloist of Montreal's Les Voix Baroques ensemble with whom he extensively tours.
Matthew White has recorded for the Naxos, Harmonia Mundi and Analekta labels. His recording, Elegeia won a 2004 Cannes Classical Award for best new early music solo recording.
White has now ceased to perform as a countertenor and has been Artist Director of Early Music Vancouver from the 2013 until 2020, and the CEO of the Victoria Symphony since 2020. [2]
René Jacobs is a Belgian musician. He came to fame as a countertenor, but later in his career he became known as a conductor of baroque and classical opera.
Bach Collegium Japan (BCJ) is composed of an orchestra and a chorus specializing in Baroque music, playing on period instruments. It was founded in 1990 by Masaaki Suzuki with the purpose of introducing Japanese audiences to European Baroque music; Suzuki is still the music director. The ensemble has recorded all of Bach’s cantatas, a project that extended from 1995 to 2018 and accounts for over half of its discography.
Les Arts Florissants is a Baroque musical ensemble in residence at the Théâtre de Caen in Caen, France. The organization was founded by conductor William Christie in 1979. The ensemble derives its name from the 1685 opera Les Arts florissants by Marc-Antoine Charpentier. The organization consists of a chamber orchestra of period instruments and a small vocal ensemble. Current notable members include soprano Danielle de Niese and tenor Paul Agnew, who has served as assistant conductor since 2007. Jonathan Cohen is also on the conducting staff; Christie remains the organization's artistic director.
Daniel John Taylor, is a Canadian countertenor, conductor and early music specialist. Taylor directs the Trinity Choir, the Theatre of Early Music and is Professor of Opera, Voice and Early Music at the University of Toronto.
Bejun Mehta is an American countertenor. He has been awarded the Echo Klassik, the Gramophone Award, Le Diamant d’Opera Magazine, the Choc de Classica, the Traetta Prize, and been nominated for the Grammy Award, the Laurence Olivier Award, and the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik. Writing in the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Michael Stallknecht called him "arguably the best counter tenor in the world today."
