History

Founded in 1996, [3] its first store opened in Howell, Michigan in 1998. [4]

In 2002, Mattress World had three stores in Michigan. Mattress World was, according to a Furniture Today article, the apparent high bidder for six Mattress Discounters stores in Metro Detroit; Mattress Discounters was exiting the Michigan market. [5] By 2009, the company had 22 locations.

Acquisition

In May 2009, it acquired seven Mattress Gallery stores in Indianapolis; the Mattress Gallery stores, previously owned by the Indianapolis-based Today's Bedroom One, had closed in April 2009. The stores reopened as Mattress World locations in June 2009. [6]

In 2011, the chain had 28 stores, with 21 in Michigan and 7 in Indianapolis. [3] One of its Michigan stores was located in Ann Arbor. [7] At the time, it had 100 employees.

In May 2011, Mattress World of Michigan was acquired by Art Van Furniture which said it would keep the Mattress World name and the employees. [8] Art Van stated that it may re-brand some stores as Art Van PureSleep. [7] The acquisition of Mattress World gave Art Van its first stores outside of Michigan. [3] The price of the acquisition was not disclosed. [9] Art Van assigned Armando Murillo, previously the employee who established Pure Sleep operations outside of Michigan, as the vice president operating Mattress World. [10]

In 2013, the Mattress World went bankrupt, with the majority re-opened as Art Van PureSleep stores.

History of the Middle Eastern people in Metro Detroit Aspect of history

In 2004, Metro Detroit had one of the largest settlements of Middle Eastern people, including Arabs and Chaldo-Assyrians in the United States. As of 2007 about 300,000 people in Southeast Michigan traced their descent from the Middle East. Dearborn's sizeable Arab community consists largely of Lebanese people who immigrated for jobs in the auto industry in the 1920s, and of more recent Yemenis and Iraqis. In 2010 the four Metro Detroit counties had at least 200,000 people of Middle Eastern origin, excluding Jews. Bobby Ghosh of TIME said that some estimates gave much larger numbers. From 1990 to 2000 the percentage of people speaking Arabic in the home increased by 106% in Wayne County, 99.5% in Macomb County, and 41% in Oakland County.

A 2013 report by the Global Detroit and Data Driven Detroit stated that of the immigrant ethnic groups to Metro Detroit, the largest segment is the Indian population. As of 2012, the Indian populations of Farmington Hills and Troy are among the twenty largest Indian communities in the United States. As of the 2000 U.S. Census there were 39,527 people with origins from post-partition India in Metro Detroit, making them the largest Asian ethnic group in the Wayne County-Macomb County-Oakland County tri-county area. People of those origins are found throughout Metro Detroit, with the majority being in Oakland County.
