Matthew Victor Barrett, who performed as Matty B, is a former Australian hip hop rapper and MC. Originally from Perth, he released an album, The Courageous LP, in 2002 on Obese Records. He relocated to the Gold Coast in 2006 and followed with an eight-track extended play, Simple but Effective in May, on his own label, B-Style Entertainment.

Biography

Matthew Barrett grew up in Western Australia and became a member of Perth's Syllabolix Crew. [1] In the 1990s he was a professional surfer, [2] [3] Barrett began rapping seriously when Syllabolix was formed in 1999. [1] [4] He recalled, "I used to just freestyle at parties, take the piss out of people. My mates would tell me I should go rap, since I was about 17." [1]

Formerly signed to Obese Records, he released music on his own label, B-Style Entertainment, in 2006. [4] Barrett's first track to be released was "Courageous", appearing on the Culture of Kings compilation in 2000. It was co-written by Barrett with fellow Syllabolix Crew mate, Scott Griffiths (a.k.a. Optamus). [5] [6]

In 2001 he performed at the Margaret River Masters Concert. [3] In the next year he performed at the Big Day Out concerts. [3] He followed in 2002 by his debut album, The Courageous LP. [7] [8] The album was co-produced by Griffiths and Darren Reutens (a.k.a. Dazastah) of Syllabolix. [3]

Mandy Nolan of Byron Shire Echo felt The Courageous LP was "a must listen release for people who love music coming from the luckiest country in the world; Australia." [3] Beat Magazine's Carlisle Rogers described listening to it as "akin to digging Australia's homegrown version of grime. After all, hip hop's very roots lie in that soil composed of just talking about everyday life, unfiltered, unadulterated." [4] An album track, "Fridays (I Love 'Em)", also appears on Triple J's 2005 album, Super Request—Dog's Breakfast, which is a compilation album of frequently requested songs from that station's Super Request program. [2] "Fridays" was written by Reutens. [5]

Barrett relocated to the Gold Coast [4] and released an eight-track EP, Simple but Effective, in May 2006 on his own label, B-Style Entertainment. [4] [9] He described his song writing style "I used to, when I first started, write rhymes all over the place on bits of paper and then try to match it up with beats later. Now, what I do is get beats from Syllabolix and I listen to the beats first for a few months and I work out the feel of the beats. At the same time I'm dreaming up song titles and subject matter, and things I want to talk about. I match them all up and I start writing over the beat." [4] He performed at the Rosemount Hotel in Perth at an All Stars gig following the Robert Hunter Cup in October 2014, in honor of his late friend Hunter. [10]

Obese Records Record label

Obese Records was a record label that released music from the Australian hip hop genre. It was the largest Australian independent hip hop label, including performers Pegz, Thundamentals and Dialectrix. Obese Records also operated two retail stores in Melbourne, a record distribution company, a soul imprint named Plethora Records, and operates the artists' management and touring company Obese Records Artist Management.

Downsyde are an Australian hip hop group from Perth, Western Australia. The group is composed of three members, Optamus, Dazastah and Dyna-Mikes.

When the Dust Settles is the third full-length album from Australian hip hop group, Downsyde and was released in December 2004 through Obese Records. It was produced by band members Optamus, Dazastah, Cheeky and Armee. Paul Reid, formerly Paul Gary James Ridge,, better known by the stage name Drapht, is an Australian hip hop artist from Perth. Drapht is a member of the Syllabolix (SBX) crew, a collective that includes fellow Perth-based hip hop artists such as Downsyde.

Tirren Staaf, otherwise known as Pegz, is an Australian hip hop artist and producer hailing from Melbourne, Victoria. He was the CEO of Obese Records — the record label responsible for artists such as Hilltop Hoods, Downsyde, and Bias B.

Who Am I is the second full-length album from Western Australian hip hop artist, Drapht. It was released in June 2005 through Australian Hip Hop label, Obese Records. It was released in both in a CD and a limited 2 LP vinyl format. The album features contributions by MC Layla, Dazastah (Downsyde) and Pressure. Two songs from the album, "Drink Drank Drunk" and "The Music", received airplay on community radio stations and national youth broadcaster, Triple J, and featured on national music video show, rage. "The Music" samples Living Jazz's version of "Walk On By" and was selected by Triple J as a featured track for Ausmusic month in 2005. The album has subsequently been included in the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) as part of The Art of Sound, a collaborative project between the NFSA and selected regional art galleries, which examines the intersections between sound and the visual arts.

Layla Rose Hanbury, known mononymously as Layla, is an Australian hip hop singer-songwriter and MC from Perth. In January 2005 she released her debut solo album, Heretik, on Obese Records. She is a member of Syllabolix (SBX) Crew, with other MCs including her husband, Dazastah. The couple also perform as Layla and Dazastah. During September and October 2011 the duo were a support act for another SBX artist, Drapht, on his Australia-wide Party Party Party Tour.

Mark Landon, better known by his stage name M-Phazes, is an Australian-born producer based in LA. Ryan Leaf, better known by the stage name Dialectrix, is an Australian hip hop artist from Sydney. He was a member of Down Under Beats Crew and, since 2008, has been a member of Gully Platoon. In addition to his musical career, Dialectrix works in the construction trades. He was introduced to hip hop culture through skateboarding during adolescence.

Brad Strut is an Australian hip hop emcee and singer based in Melbourne. Strut has performed and released material as a solo artist, and is also a member of hip hop group Lyrical Commission.

Robert Alan Hunter, better known as Hunter or Huntz, was an Australian rapper and hip hop artist. He was a founder of Perth's hip hop scene in the 1990s and a member of the MC collective Syllabolix (SBX) Crew. During his career, he released four albums: Done DL (2002), Going Back to Yokine (2006), Monster House (2010) and Fear and Loathing (2011).
