Max Turner is a Scottish-German vocalist, producer and songwriter. He is known for being one of the core founders and contributors of the Puppetmastaz., [1] as well as releasing a steady flow of collaborative and solo projects in his distinctive style of rhythm & poetry since his debut in 2001 [2]

Life and career

Career

In 1999 Turner moved to Berlin and founded Puppetmastaz with his cousin Paul Affeld , Chilly Gonzales [1] and several others. They were joined by Taylor Savvy [3] [4] to form the short lived rap-quartet The Bench [5] which featured on a Tommy Boy Records release among others. The album Lost Treasures [6] furthermore features early collaborations between the above-mentioned Mc's and producers such as Patric Catani, [7] [8] Bomb20 and Nitro, all of whom are considered the artistic bedrock of the Puppetmastaz crew. Other artists that Turner collaborated with and who influenced him during these formative professional years in Berlin include Peaches [9] and Gina V. D'Orio of Cobrakiller [10] as well as Jamie Lidell [11] with whom he collaborated on [12] the Puppetmastaz single Scandalous.

Working with Producer Marcus Rossknecht [13] he founded the band Meteorites [14] [15] in Barcelona where he lived for a significant period and signed to Cristian Vogel's Rise Robots Rise Records. His first solo album The purple pro, produced in Stockholm, [16] gained some underground recognition that garnered further momentum through a string of collaborative releases with producers such as SchneiderTM for Cityslang, Cristian Vogel [17] for Novamute and Matias Aguayo's De Papel [18] for Kompakt records. [19] He has also contributed vocals to several releases by Japanese sound artist Kouhei Matsunaga on labels such as Important Records, Wordsound and Autechre's Skam label under the alternative moniker Google Premiere;. [20]

In 2009 Turner left Europe to train in Carnatic singing in India, [21] exploring the subcontinent and founding a live project called The Migrations [22] with several collaborators which contributed to the Boarder movement in Colombo, Sri Lanka, while also performing in metropolitan hubs of India. [21] Turner has worked as an arranger, producer and songwriter for several seasons of runway shows by Vivienne Westwood [23] under the direction of Dominik Emrich.

He is known for his rap albums, his collaborations with singer and musician Feist and rapper Drake, his albums of classical piano compositions, and for his collaborations with electronic musicians Daft Punk and Boys Noize, the latter of whom he also produces under the moniker Octave Minds. In 2022, he and Plastikman released a piano rework of the latter's 1998 minimal techno classic album Consumed in collaboration with Canadian musician Tiga, titled "Consumed in Key".

The film was co-written by Canadian pianist and rapper Gonzales and French director and screenwriter Céline Sciamma. It was released in the Fall of 2010, and stars a variety of Canadian-born musicians, including Gonzales himself, Peaches, Feist and Tiga. Additionally, Gonzales' father appears in the film.

It was originally a promo poster for Chilly's show in Liverpool on February 9, 2011, and Chilly liked it so much that he used it for the cover.
