Mayank Singh Bawa is an Indian-American computer scientist, entrepreneur, and technology executive. He is the co-founder and CEO of WorkSpan, and previously co-founded Aster Data Systems, a pioneering big data company that was acquired by Teradata in 2011 for $325 million. [1] [2]
Bawa earned his Bachelor of Technology degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay). [3] He later completed his PhD in Computer Science at Stanford University under Héctor García-Molina. [4] [5]
During his time at Stanford, Bawa conducted research in distributed systems, peer-to-peer networks, and data management. His academic work included publications on peer-to-peer research and distributed algorithms. [6]
In 2005, Bawa co-founded Aster Data Systems along with Stanford graduate students George Candea and Tasso Argyros. The company was based in San Carlos, California and focused on data management and analysis software.
Bawa served as CEO of Aster Data from 2005 to 2010, growing the company from three founders to a well-rounded team that developed market-defining products. [7] Under his leadership, the company developed SQL-MapReduce (SQL-MR), which became a foundational technology in the big data industry. [1]
In April 2011, Teradata Corporation acquired Aster Data Systems for $325 million. [8]
Following the acquisition, Bawa served as Co-President of the Teradata Aster division from 2011 to 2013. He was also a member of Teradata's CTO Council in 2013. [1]
