The McLaren LT170 was a sports prototype racing car, built in 1971. The LT170 was a hybrid of the Lola T70 and McLaren M6B Can-Am cars, and used a Chevrolet V8 engine. One car was built, which Howie Sangster used on the way to winning the 1972 Western Australia Sports Car Championship.
Part way through the 1971 Australian Sports Car Championship (ASCC), Pinocchio's Racing Team built a hybrid of the Lola T70 and McLaren M6B Can-Am sports prototypes, and christened the resulting car as the McLaren LT170. [1] The car wore the customer version of the M6 McLaren bodywork, known as the M12. It made its debut in the third round of the series, held at Wanneroo Park, in the hands of Howie Sangster, who took second place and the fastest lap, finishing right behind John Harvey's conventional McLaren M6B. [2] In conjunction with another second earlier in the season with a Matich SR3, Sangster took third in the driver's standings, with 12 points.
Sangster drove the car to victory in the 1972 Western Australian Sports Car Championship, which was also the Wanneroo Park round of the 1972 Australian Sports Car Championship. [3] He finished almost a minute ahead of Stuart Kostera's Matich SR3. [4] He entered the Wanneroo Park round of the 1973 Australian Sports Car Championship as well, but retired from the race. [5]
Bill Maddocks contested the Adelaide round of the 1974 Australian Sports Car Championship with the LT170 [6] and also competed in the final round at Symmons Plains. [7] Maddocks continued to race the car in 1975. [8]
Denis Clive Hulme was a New Zealand racing driver who won the 1967 Formula One World Drivers' Championship for the Brabham team. Between his debut at Monaco in 1965 and his final race in the 1974 US Grand Prix, he started 112 Grands Prix, resulting in eight victories and 33 podium finishes. He also finished third in the overall standing in 1968 and 1972.

Formula 5000 was an open wheel, single seater auto-racing formula that ran in different series in various regions around the world from 1968 to 1982. It was originally intended as a low-cost series aimed at open-wheel racing cars that no longer fit into any particular formula. The '5000' denomination comes from the maximum 5.0 litre engine capacity allowed in the cars, although many cars ran with smaller engines. Manufacturers included McLaren, Eagle, March, Lola, Lotus, Elfin, Matich and Chevron.
The Lola T70 is a sports prototype developed by British manufacturer Lola Cars in 1965, the successor to its Mk6. Lola built the aluminium monocoque chassis, which were typically powered by large American V8s.
Francis Anthony Matich was an Australian racing car driver. A highly successful motor racing competitor in the 1960s and 1970s, Matich built his own range of Matich sports cars and open wheel cars, mainly to support his own career, but some cars found success with other drivers. In these and other makes he won five Tasman Series races, two Australian Grands Prix, the 1972 Australian Drivers' Championship and a number of other Australian motor racing titles.

The McLaren M6A was a Group 7 prototype race car designed and developed by driver Bruce McLaren, and built by his Bruce McLaren Motor Racing team for their entry in 1967 Can-Am season. As a replacement for the team's M1Bs from 1966, the Chevrolet-powered M6A's improved design earned Bruce McLaren and his team their first of multiple Can-Am championships. After the M6As were replaced by the M8A in preparation for 1968, McLaren and technical partner Trojan–Tauranac Racing developed the M6B which was sold to customers for use in Can-Am as well as other racing series.

The 1972 Skipper Chrysler 6 Hour Le Mans was an endurance motor race for Sports Open, Sports Closed, Improved Production Touring Cars & Series Production Touring Cars. The event was staged by the W.A. Sporting Car Club at the Wanneroo Park Circuit in Western Australia on Sunday 4 June 1972. It was the 18th and final 6 Hour Le Mans race to be held.

1965 saw the revival of the world’s oldest motor race when the Royal Automobile Club brought the 30th RAC International Tourist Trophy Race with the Senior Service Trophy to Oulton Park. The TT, was the fourth round of the International Championship for Manufacturers. In addition, it was also round three of the British Sports Car Championship. This was the held at the Oulton Park circuit, in Cheshire, England, on 1 May.
