Md. Anwarul Azim Arif is a Bangladesh academic, banker, and vice-chancellor of the International Islamic University Chittagong. He is the former vice-chancellor of the University of Chittagong. [1] He is the former chairperson of Social Islami Bank Limited. [2]

Arif is the chairman of the central executive committee of the Central Shariah Board for Islamic Banks of Bangladesh. [3]

Early life

Arif completed his master's degree in commerce at the University of Chittagong. [4] He completed his MBA at the University of the Philippines. [4]

Career

Arif joined the University of Chittagong as a lecturer in 1976 in the Management Studies department. [4] [5] He joined National Bank as a probationary officer in 1984. [4]

From 7 January 2012 to 6 August 2012, Arif was the dean of the Faculty of Engineering. [6]

From 2011 to 2105, Arif was the vice-chancellor of the University of Chittagong. [4] In August 2011, he successfully convinced proctor Dr Mohammad Akter Hossain and three assistant proctors to rescind their resignation. [7] [8] They had resigned following bad behavior of Bangladesh Chhatra League activists with them. [7]

Arif was appointed the chairperson of Social Islami Bank Limited in November 2017. [4] He was the additional managing director of First Security Islami Bank Limited. [4] Kazi Osman Ali was appointed Managing of Social Islami Bank under Arif. [9] After his appointment nine director of the bank resigned which included Hakim Md. Yousuf Harun Bhuiyan, one of five shareholders and head of Hamdard Laboratories (Waqf) Bangladesh. [10] Former chairman of the Bank, Major (Retired) Dr Md. Rezaul Haque, was removed and replaced with Arif as part of S. Alam Group of Industries, a Chittagong-based conglomerate, of consolidating control over the bank. [11] Arif was appointed as a representative of Hasan Abason Limited, a subsidiary of S. Alam Group of Industries. [12]

In July 2021, Arif was appointed Vice Chancellor of International Islamic University Chittagong. [13]

Shah Abdul Hannan was a Bangladeshi Islamic philosopher, writer, economist, educator and media personality. He served as the deputy governor of the Bangladesh Bank and chairman of the National Board of Revenue. He was the founder vice chancellor of Darul Ihsan University, North South University, chairman of the Islamic Economics Research Bureau, and the director of Islami Bank Bangladesh Ltd.
