The Meadow Club Invitation [1] or formally the Meadow Club of Southampton Invitation or Meadow Club Invitational and also known as the Southampton Invitation or Southampton Invitational [2] was predominantly a men's grass court tennis tournament established in 1887 at the Meadow Club, Southampton, Long Island, New York, United States. The tournament was staged as part of ILTC Circuit until 1973 when it was discontinued. [3]

History

In 1887 the Meadow Club was founded [4] It is a private members located at Southampton, Long Island, New York, United States. [5] The club inaugurated a major international tennis tournament called the Meadow Club Invitation [6] that was staged for 85 editions between 1888 and 1973, though it was not staged continuously. [7] A women's invitation singles tournament was introduced briefly in the late 1920s to early 1940s under the title of the Southampton Invitational Round Robin or Meadow Club Invitational Round Robin, though women did take part most years in the mixed doubles events.

With the exception of 1903 when the English player Laurie Doherty won the men's event it was completely dominated by American players until the mid-1940s with multiple winners such as; Howard Augustus Taylor, Vinnie Richards, Bill Tilden II, Frank Parker, and Bobby Riggs. [8] After World War II up until at least 1969 more foreign players won this event including; Pancho Segura, Roy Emerson, Ian Vermaak, Fred Stolle, Tony Roche and Owen Davidson and Rod Laver. [9] The Meadow Club Invitation [10] ran until 1973 when it was discontinued. [11]

The racket sport traditionally named lawn tennis, invented in Birmingham, England now commonly known simply as tennis, is the direct descendant of what is now denoted real tennis or royal tennis, which continues to be played today as a separate sport with more complex rules. Most rules of (lawn) tennis derive from this precursor and it is reasonable to see both sports as variations of the same game. Most historians believe that tennis was originated in the monastic cloisters in northern France in the 12th century, but the ball was then struck with the palm of the hand; hence, the name jeu de paume. The Sarasota Open is a professional tennis tournament played on outdoor green clay courts. It is currently part of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Challenger Tour. From 2022, the event is held at the Payne Park Tennis Center in Sarasota, Florida, United States. It has been held at the United Tennis Center in Bradenton, Florida in its inaugural event in 2008 and in 2017. Other locations were Lakewood Ranch (2015–2016) and Longboat Key (2009–2014). An expected move to Bath and Racquet Athletic Club near Bee Ridge and U.S. 41 fell through as the tournament was moved to United Tennis Center in 2017. After 2 years off due to the COVID-19 and owners changing, the Sarasota Open announced a comeback in 2022. Under new management, the tournament made another move from their previous location at Laurel Oak Country Club (2018–2019) to Payne Park.

The Eckerd Open is a defunct WTA Tour affiliated women's tennis tournament founded in 1953 as a combined men's and women's clay court tennis tournament called the Masters Invitational tournament in St Augustine, Florida. In 1954 that event moved to Jacksonville, Florida until 1959. In 1960 the event moved to St Petersburg. It remained at the former location until 1974. After the combined event the St. Petersburg Masters Invitational finished in 1970. The womens event continued under various brand names and various locations in the Tampa Bay Area until it was abolished in 1990.

Valentine Gill "Vallie" Hall III was an American tennis player who was active in the late 19th century. He was the elder son of Valentine Gill Hall Jr. and Mary Livingston Ludlow of the Livingston family. Vallie's eldest sister was Anna Rebecca Hall, making him an uncle of First Lady of the United States, Anna Eleanor Roosevelt.

Mohammed Sleem was a tennis player and lawyer who represented India at the Davis Cup and Olympic Games. Governors Island Golf Course was a military course on Governors Island in New York Harbor, New York City, approximately 800 yards (732 m) from the southern tip of Manhattan Island. The golf course offered one of the most unique golf experiences in New York City due to its views of the Brooklyn and Manhattan skylines, with the Statue of Liberty as a backdrop. The Northern India Championshipsor formally the Northern India Lawn Tennis Championship and, also known as the Northern India Tennis Championships was a combined men's and women's tennis tournament was founded as the North India Championship c. 1899. The first tournament was played at Delhi, India. The championships ran until 1970 before it was discontinued.

The Kingston International Championships also known as the Kingston International Invitation and the St. Andrew International Invitation was a men's and women's clay court then later hard court tennis tournament established in 1932 as the Kingston International Tournament and first played at St. Andrews Club, then later Sabina Park, then at the Liguanea Club, Kingston, St. Andrews Parish, Jamaica until 1970.

The Seabright Invitational Tournament was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament staged annually at the Seabright Lawn Tennis and Cricket Club, Rumson, New Jersey, United States from 1884 to 1950.
