The Medal of Merit of the Autonomous Region of Madeira is the highest honour given by the autonomous region. The medal is awarded by the Legislative Assembly of Madeira to 'natural or legal entities, public or private, national or foreign, living or posthumously, who have rendered outstanding services to the Region or who, for any other reason, the Region understands that must be distinguish ”. [1]

The honour was created by Regional Decree n. 3/79/M, signed on January 30 and published on March 24, 1979.

The decision of the attribution is made by the Standing Committee of the Assembly, having received a proposal «of any of the sovereign organs of the Republic, of the Regional Government or of any member of the Legislative Assembly» and taking the opinion of the President of the Regional Government or of a Regional Secretary and of other entities in the area concerned. At the request of any Member, an vote may be taken in the plenary of the Assembly.

The honour is presented by the President of the Legislative Assembly, in a solemn act defined by the Permanent Commission.

The medal model must comply with the following requirements defined by law: be made of silver, have a silver filigree cord and bear, on its reverse, the cross of the Order of Christ (present on the flag and coat of arms of Madeira) and the sayings 'Autonomous Region of Madeira' and 'Portuguese Republic'. To date, the medal has only been awarded to five personalities, four of them Madeirans (Ornelas Camacho, Rodrigues, Jardim and Ronaldo) and two continental ones (Sá Carneiro and Bishop Santana).

Autonomous Region of Príncipe Subdivision of São Tomé and Príncipe

A regional election was held in Madeira on 9 October 2011, to determine the composition of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. In the election, the Social Democratic Party, led by Alberto João Jardim, who has been in power since 1978, archived, once again, an absolute majority.

The last regional election was held on 22 September 2019 and the party with the most votes was the Social Democratic Party with 56,448 votes, which stand-alone holds an absolute majority in the assembly.

2015 Madeiran regional election

A regional election was held in Madeira on 29 March 2015, to determine the composition of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. The election was the first in which the former President of the Region, Alberto João Jardim, was not on the ballot as he earlier stated that he would step down as President and leader of the PSD-Madeira in January 2015. On 29 December 2014, the PSD-Madeira elected Miguel Albuquerque as the new president of the party's regional section. After winning the presidency, Albuquerque stated that he would not assume the Presidency of the Government without an election, so Alberto João Jardim asked President Aníbal Cavaco Silva to dissolve the Parliament and call an election, which was scheduled for 29 March.

Rubina Everlien Berardo is a Madeiran and Portuguese politician and pundit who was a Social Democratic Party (PSD) Member of the Assembly of the Republic for the constituency of Madeira between 2015 and 2019. Since February 2018, she is one of the vice-presidents of her party's parliamentary group in the Assembly of the Republic.

Regional elections were held on 22 September 2019 to determine the composition of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of Madeira in Portugal. All 47 members of the Assembly were up for election.

2000 Madeiran regional election

The Madeira Regional Election (2000) was an election held on 15 October 2000 for the legislative assembly and government of the Portuguese autonomous region of the Madeira. There were 61 seats in dispute, two more than in the previous election, distributed by the 11 municipalities of the archipelago proportionally to the number of registered voters of each municipality.

2007 Madeiran regional election

A regional election was held in Madeira on 6 May 2007, to determine the composition of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. The election was a snap election, as it was original schedule to only happen in October 2008. The election was called after the President of the Regional Government, Alberto João Jardim, resigned after his government clashed with the Socialist Prime Minister José Sócrates due to the new regional finance law approved by the Sócrates government. Jardim defended that the new law was harmful for Madeira's interests. By this time, the Social Democratic Party (PSD) had been in power, nonstop, since 1976.

The election will replace all 47 members of the Madeira Assembly, and the new members will then elect the President of the Autonomous Region.
