The Meghalaya Games are a sports event held in Meghalaya, India which were started in 2001. [1] After a long break, the event was revived in 2019, [2] [3] and is to be held annually from 2024 onwards. [4]

Some indigenous tribal games have been included in the event since the third edition. [5] [6]

2024 Meghalaya Games

The 2024 games, held in Tura, were originally to be held in 2023, but were postponed. [7] They were held from 15 to 20 January 2024, with 22 sporting disciplines to be contested, and 23 crore (US$2.9 million) to be spent on the event. [8]

Traditional indigenous games of the three major Meghalaya tribes featured in the games included maw-point (the Khasi equivalent of the game of seven stones), rah mukhrah (a Jaintia traditional game, where the competitors carry a heavy rock to the finish line), and wa’pong sika (a Garo traditional game, where two teams compete to push a bamboo pole towards the opponent’s goal post) [9] [10] The games were opened on 15 January by President Droupadi Murmu. [11]

The Garo people are a Tibeto-Burmese ethnic group who live mostly in the Northeast Indian state of Meghalaya with a smaller number in the neighbouring Bangladesh. Historically, the name Garo was used for a large number of different peoples living on the southern bank of Brahmaputra River, but now refers primarily to those who call themselves A•chik Mande or simply A•chik or Mande and the name "Garo" is now being used by outsiders as an exonym. They are the second-largest tribe in Meghalaya after the Khasi and comprise about a third of the local population.

These Games were originally scheduled for 2015, however, in the Olympic Council of Asia's general assembly in Singapore on 3 July 2009, the committee decided to move the Games to one year before the Winter Olympics moving forward. The games began on 19 February with the opening ceremony and ended with the closing ceremony on 26 February.

The Seng Khasi movement began in Mawkhar, Shillong on Nov 23rd 1899. The Seng Khasi is a socio-cultural organisation formed to protect and preserve the Khasi culture and religion - Niam Khasi - from the forces of change brought by the British. It was founded by 16 young Khasi men under the guidance and mentorship of U Babu Jeebon Roy, an educationist, entrepreneur and advocate of indigenous beliefs and culture of the time. The sixteen founders were concerned about the loss of traditional Khasi culture and values due to the influence of British colonial rule and Christian missionaries.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Meghalaya State League</span> Indian football league in the state of Meghalaya

The Meghalaya State League is the top state-level football league in the Indian state of Meghalaya. It is managed by Meghalaya Football Association (MFA). Rangdajied United are the current champions by virtue of winning the third edition.

The 2022 North East Olympic Games were the second edition of the tournament. Over 3,000 athletes participated in 18 Olympic disciplines.

Meghalaya has a variety of sports. The Meghalaya Games are hosted annually in the state.
