The American territory with a population of four million people qualified 22 athletes in eight different sports. The appearance of the Puerto Rican delegation at the Beijing Olympics marked the commonwealth's sixteenth consecutive appearance at the Summer Olympics, and its twenty-second appearance at any Olympic games, since its debut at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, England. Of its competitors participating in events that involve progression by heats, six athletes advanced at least one round in their events, and two advanced at least two rounds, with Asunción Ocasio almost medaling bronze in taekwondo. However, there were no Puerto Rican medalists at the Beijing Olympics. McWilliams Arroyo, a boxer, bore Puerto Rico's flag at the ceremonies.

The Asian Football Confederation's Pre-Olympic Tournament was the qualifying tournament for the 2012 Summer Olympics Football tournament in London. Thirty-five teams entered the qualification, where AFC have three spots for automatic qualifiers and a spot for inter-continental play-off against the fourth representative of the Pre-Olympic Tournament in African zone. The competition commenced in February 2011 and was completed in March 2012.

Zamani was the only medalist from the Afghan side and the first Afghan medalist in 20 years. None of the remaining athletes advanced past the qualifying stages, and as such did not win any medals.

Vazik Kazarian aka Vazik Ghazarian was an Iranian Armenian boxer who became a member of Iran senior national Boxing team in 1956, and was also a member of Tehran Taj Club. He participated as a member of the Iranian boxers at the 1958 Asian Games, in the Light-welterweight division, and also at the 1960 Summer Olympics, in the Light-welterweight division. In Tokyo 1958, Kazarian reached the final of the Light-welterweight division after defeating Sueb Chundakowsolaya from Thailand, on points in the semifinal, and eventually won the silver medal of the 63.5 kg boxing division, after losing on points to Shigemasa Kawakami from Japan in the final. He retired from championship boxing and the Iranian national boxing team, after returning from the 1960 Summer Olympics.
