Merthyr is a former suburb of the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is now a neighbourhood within the suburb of New Farm centred on Merthyr Road.^[1]

The City of Brisbane is a local government area that has jurisdiction over the inner portion of the metropolitan area of Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, Australia. Brisbane is located in the county of Stanley and is the largest city followed by Ipswich with bounds in part of the county. Unlike LGAs in the other mainland state capitals, which are generally responsible only for the central business districts and inner neighbourhoods of those cities, the City of Brisbane administers a significant portion of the Brisbane metropolitan area, serving almost half of the population of the Brisbane Greater Capital City Statistical Area. As such, it has a larger population than any other local government area in Australia. The City of Brisbane was the first Australian LGA to reach a population of more than one million. Its population is roughly equivalent to the populations of Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory combined. In 2016–2017, the council administers a budget of over $3 billion, by far the largest budget of any LGA in Australia.

Queensland is the second-largest and third-most populous state in the Commonwealth of Australia. Situated in the north-east of the country, it is bordered by the Northern Territory, South Australia and New South Wales to the west, south-west and south respectively. To the east, Queensland is bordered by the Coral Sea and Pacific Ocean. To its north is the Torres Strait, with Papua New Guinea located less than 200 km across it from the mainland. The state is the world's sixth-largest sub-national entity, with an area of 1,852,642 square kilometres (715,309 sq mi).

New Farm, Queensland Suburb of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

New Farm is a riverside inner suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The suburb is located 2 kilometres east of the Brisbane CBD on a large bend of the Brisbane River. New Farm is partly surrounded by the Brisbane River, with land access from the north-west through Fortitude Valley and from the north through Newstead. Merthyr is a neighbourhood within New Farm; until 1975 it was a separate suburb.

History

The area takes its name from the residence Merthyr of Queensland Premier Samuel Griffith in Llewellyn Street overlooking the Brisbane River. He named the house after his birthplace was Merthyr Tydfil in Wales.^[2] Griffith died in 1920. The Merthyr property was subdivided in 1929. The house was demolished in 1963 as it was too expensive to maintain.^[3]

Sir Samuel Walker Griffith, was an Australian judge and politician who served as the inaugural Chief Justice of Australia, in office from 1903 to 1919. He also served a term as Chief Justice of Queensland and two terms as Premier of Queensland, and played a key role in the drafting of the Australian Constitution.

The Brisbane River is the longest river in South East Queensland, Australia, and flows through the city of Brisbane, before emptying into Moreton Bay. John Oxley, the first European to explore the river, named it after the Governor of New South Wales, Sir Thomas Brisbane in 1823. The penal colony of Moreton Bay later adopted the same name, eventually becoming the present city of Brisbane.

Merthyr Tydfil is a large town in Wales, with a population of about 63,546, situated approximately 23 miles (37 km) north of Cardiff. At one time the largest town in Wales, Merthyr Tydfil is today its fifth largest urban area by population. Situated in the historic county of Glamorgan, it is the main town in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough and is administered by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council. Both the town and the county borough are often referred to as simply 'Merthyr'.

Transport

It is the northside terminus of Tranlink Bus route 196, Fairfield Gardens to City to New Farm (Merthyr). It is also served by route 199, West End to City to New Farm (Teneriffe Ferry). The nearby stops are Stops 11 and 14 on Merthyr Road depending on direction of travel.

Teneriffe ferry wharf is located on the northern side of the Brisbane River serving the Brisbane suburb of Teneriffe in Queensland, Australia. It is served by Transdev Brisbane Ferries' CityCat service and a cross-river service to Bulimba.

Facilities

There is a small commercial precinct around the intersection of Merthyr Road and Brunswick Street, that includes Merthyr Village.
