The Messengers of Peace (MoP) programme is an initiative by the World Organization of the Scout Movement, which along with the Scouts of the World Award and the World Scout Environment Programmes form the Better World Framework programme. [1] [2] [3] [4] Since 2011, Scouts have committed to projects, of various scales, to make the world a more peaceful place and logged their hours on the Messengers of Peace Global Network site. [2] [5] [6] [7] Projects fall into three categories: Personal, Community, Environment. [8]

World Organization of the Scout Movement international Scouting organization

The World Organization of the Scout Movement is the largest international Scouting organization. WOSM has 170 members. These members are recognized national Scout organizations, which collectively have over 50 million participants. WOSM was established in 1922, and has its operational headquarters at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and its legal seat in Geneva, Switzerland. It is the counterpart of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS).

Scouts of the World Award

The Scouts of the World Award is an international Scout recognition administered by the World Organization of the Scout Movement. It was developed to give "young people more opportunities to face the challenges of the future" as identified by the United Nations Millennium Declaration in 2000. That declaration identified eight Millennium Development Goals and participation in the award helps one work towards those goals.

Scout (Scouting) member of scout movement

A Scout is a child, usually 10–18 years of age, participating in the worldwide Scouting movement. Because of the large age and development span, many Scouting associations have split this age group into a junior and a senior section. Scouts are organized into troops averaging 20–30 Scouts under the guidance of one or more Scout Leaders. Troops subdivide into patrols of about 6–8 Scouts and engage in outdoor and special interest activities. Troops may affiliate with local, national, and international organizations. Some national Scouting associations have special interest programs such as Air Scouts, Sea Scouts, outdoor high adventure, Scouting bands, and rider Scouts.

The initiative is supported by King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia and King Carl XVI Gustaf, and follows on from the Gifts of Peace initiative to mark the centenary of Scouting in 2007. [9] [2] [10] Funding has been made available to support The Messengers of Peace Support Fund. [9]

Former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo has been appointed as a Messenger of Peace Ambassador by the Africa Scout Region. [11] [12]

President of Nigeria Head of state and head of Nigerian government

The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is the head of state and head of government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The President of Nigeria is also the commander-in-chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces. The President is elected in national elections which take place every four years. The first President of Nigeria was Nnamdi Azikiwe, who took office on October 1, 1963. However, Shehu Shagari is the First Executive President of Nigeria elected Democratically in 1979. The current President, Muhammadu Buhari took office on May 29, 2015 as the 15th President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Olusegun Obasanjo Nigerian politician

Olusegun Mathew Okikiola Aremu Obasanjo, GCFR, Ph.D. is a former Nigerian Army general who was President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007. Obasanjo was a career soldier before serving twice as his nation's head of state: He served as a military ruler from 13 February 1976 to 1 October 1979 and as a democratically elected president from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2007. From July 2004 to January 2006, Obasanjo also served as Chairperson of the African Union. Obasanjo is the first Nigerian to serve as a military head of state and a civilian president.

Africa Scout Region (World Organization of the Scout Movement)

The Africa Scout Region is the divisional office of the World Scout Bureau of the World Organization of the Scout Movement, headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, with satellite offices in Cape Town, South Africa, and Dakar, Senegal. The Africa Region services Scouting in Sub-Saharan Africa and neighboring islands that are recognized members of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM). Currently, the region has 39 member National Scout Associations/Organizations and 11 potential members. There are about one million registered Scouts in Africa, though it is suspected that there are about twice that number in the region. The large nations of Mali, Guinea-Bissau and the Central African Republic, and several smaller nations, are not yet WOSM members, for various reasons.

Trees For The World

Trees For The World is an international Scouts Messengers of Peace project for Scouts around the world, in which each Scout will plant a tree on the Saturday after Earth Day. [13]

The idea of Trees For The World started during the First Interamerican Leadership Training, with delegates of Argentina, Canada, Curaçao, Ecuador, Honduras, Panama, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and the United States brainstorming about the common problems that strike their nations. After a consensus, the creation of a long-term project that involved the Scouts of the world to spread a culture of peace and at the same time give an impact on their community was created. [14] In September 2014, Trees For The World received a Messengers of Peace Hero Award. [15]

The Trees For The World Organizing Committee (TFTWOC) (Spanish: Comité Organizador de Árboles Para El Mundo, COAPEM), founded in February 2014, is the group of Scouts involved in organizing and promoting the project. There are currently 12 TFTWOC members from 10 countries from the Interamerican Scout Region.

Interamerican Scout Region (World Organization of the Scout Movement)

The Interamerican Region is the divisional office of the World Scout Bureau of the World Organization of the Scout Movement, headquartered in Ciudad del Saber, Panama. The Interamerican Region services Scouting in the Western Hemisphere, both North and South America. Until the 1960s, the "Inter-American Scout Advisory Committee" serviced only Mexico, Central and South America, with Canada and the United States serviced through the then-named "Boy Scouts International Bureau" in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Even today, the Interamerican Region exists more for the benefit of countries south of the Rio Grande, as evidenced by the website being only in Spanish until 2011; consequently, the United States and Canada did not participate as vigorously in regional activities as do other national organizations around the world, however this is changing in the 2010s.

Trees For The World 2014 was open from April 26 to September 27, 2014. A total of 14,645 Scouts from 24 countries planted a total number of 57,161 trees. [16] [17] [18] [19] [20] [21]

Scouting or the Scouts The Scout Movement is a voluntary non-political educational movement for young people open to all without distinction of gender, origin, race or creed, in accordance with the purpose, principles and method conceived by the Founder, Baden Powell. The purpose of the Scout Movement is to contribute to the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual potentials as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities. During the first half of the twentieth century, the movement grew to encompass three major age groups for boys and, in 1910, a new organization, Girl Guides, was created for girls. It is one of several worldwide youth organizations.

Scouts Canada

Scouts Canada is a Canadian Scouting association providing programs for young people, aged 5 to 26, with the stated aim "to help develop well rounded youth, better prepared for success in the world.". Scouts Canada, in affiliation with the French-language Association des Scouts du Canada, is a member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM). 2015-16 youth membership stands at 61,438, a 5% decline from 64,693 in 2014-15. Over the same period, volunteer numbers stabilized with 20,717 in 2015 and 20,756 in 2016. This is a significant decline from its 1965 peak of 288,084 youth and 33,524 volunteers.

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA), one of the largest private youth organizations in the United States, has policies which prohibit those who are not willing to subscribe to the BSA's Declaration of Religious Principle, which is usually interpreted as banning atheists, and, until January 2014, prohibited all "known or avowed homosexuals", from membership in its Scouting program. The ban on adults who are "open or avowed homosexuals" from leadership positions was lifted in July 2015. Prior to these policy changes, BSA had denied or revoked membership status or leadership positions for violation of these foundational principles. The BSA had contended that its policies were essential in its mission to instill in young people the values of the Scout Promise, or Oath, and Scout Law.

Palestinian Scout Association

The Scout movement in Palestine started in 1912 at St. George's School in Jerusalem, and participated in the World Scout Jamborees in 1929 and 1933. The Palestinian Scout Association was recognized by the World Scout Bureau in 1945. However, recognition was withdrawn in 1949. Official recognition was restored by the World Scout Conference in 1996, and the Palestinian Scout Association serves youth throughout the State of Palestine. The headquarters are in Ramallah in the West Bank, and the International Commissioner is Dr. Fayeq H. Tahboub.

Air Scouts are members of the international Scouting movement with a particular emphasis on an aviation themed programme and/or flying-based activities. Air Scouts follow the same basic Scouting programme as normal Scouts, but they devote certain amounts of time focused on their air activities.

Asociación de Scouts de México, Asociación Civil

The Asociación de Scouts de México, Asociación Civil (ASMAC) is a Scouting association in Mexico. ASMAC was formed in 1920 and became a member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement on August 26, 1926. It was registered as a Civil Association by the Mexican government on 24 February 1943. ASMAC claimed 33,509 members. The ASMAC headquarters are located in Mexico City.

Scout Association of Nigeria

The Scout Association of Nigeria (SAN) is the national Scouting organization of Nigeria. Scouting was founded in the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria in 1915 and became a member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement in 1961. SAN has about 750,210 members as of 2015.

The Great Green Wall, or Great Green Wall of the Sahara and the Sahel, is Africa's flagship initiative to combat the effects of climatic change and desertification. Led by the African Union, the initiative aims to transform the lives of millions of people by creating a mosaic of green and productive landscapes across North Africa.

The World Scout Foundation (WSF) is an international non-profit institution based in Geneva, Switzerland funded in 1969, but reorganized in the current form in 1977. The stated mission of the organization is to develop World Scouting by the provision of financial and other support to help develop the World Scout Movement through the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM). The Honorary President is HM Carl XVI Gustaf, King of Sweden who actively participates in the activities of the foundation. The organisation is headed by Chairman Siegfried Wieser, and Director John Geoghegan.

Castle Saunderson

Castle Saunderson is a castle near Belturbet, County Cavan, Ireland. It was the former family seat of the Saunderson family, it is now in ruins.

John Cook Parish was an International Commissioner of the Boy Scouts of America and elected as such to the World Scout Committee. At the 64th annual meeting of the BSA in May 1974, he was re-elected to the post and elected vice-president of the association.

Oscar Victor Palmquist Arias of Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil was one of 12 elected volunteer members of the World Scout Committee, the main executive body of the World Organization of the Scout Movement, Vice Chairman of the World Scout Conference "Curitiba-Brazil 2011" Organizing Committee and member of the International Relations Committee. He was elected at the 38th World Scout Conference in South Korea for a six-year term. Palmquist has acquired a wide experience covering 96 countries and five continents. In his job, Palmquist visits an average of 11 countries per year on several continents. As Member of the World Scout Committee and was the chairman of the MTF Membership review task force which allowed the World Scout Committee to recommend Palestine, Macao, Aruba and Curacao as WOSM members, and as Chairman of the Global Support Priority Area he created the Global Support concept and the GSAT Global Support Assessment Tool.

Dan Ownby World Scout Committee member

Daniel Gil "Dan" Ownby is a Houston area energy professional and currently serves as the International Commissioner for the Boy Scouts of America. He also is a member of the Executive Committee of the Boy Scouts of America and heads the United States Fund for International Scouting (USFIS).

Jemima Nartemle Nartey of Accra, Ghana is Vice-Chair and one of 12 elected volunteer members of the World Scout Committee, the main executive body of the World Organization of the Scout Movement.

Scott A. Teare became the Secretary General and one of 12 elected volunteer members of the World Scout Committee, the main executive body of the World Organization of the Scout Movement in January 2013.

Irina Pruidze

Irina Pruidze is Secretary General of the Georgian Organization of the Scout Movement and the outgoing Regional Chair of the Eurasia Regional Scout Committee of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM).

Ivo Stern Becka served as the Chairman of the Asociación de Scouts de México, A.C., the Chairman of the Interamerican Scout Committee, and a member of the World Scout Committee.
