Michael D. Wilson (born April 1953) [1] is an American lawyer who served as an associate justice of the Hawaii Supreme Court from 2014 to 2023. Prior to being appointed to the Hawaii Supreme Court,Wilson served as a circuit court judge for the Hawaii First Circuit from 2000 to 2014.
Wilson received a Bachelor of Science from University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1975 and a Juris Doctor from Antioch School of Law in Washington D.C. in 1979. [2] He was raised in Kailua and graduated from Kailua High School. [3]
Early in his career,he was a partner in the law firms of Pavey Wilson &Glickstein and Hart Wolff &Wilson where he practiced civil and criminal trial and appellate law. [4] He previously served as the director of the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources,chair of the Board of Land and Natural Resources,chair of the State Water Commission and a trustee of the Kahoolawe Island Reserve Commission. Wilson was appointed as a judge of the Hawaii First Circuit on May 10,2000. [4] On February 18,2014,Governor Neil Abercrombie appointed Wilson to serve as a justice of the Hawaii Supreme Court to fill the vacancy left by the mandatory retirement of Simeon R. Acoba. He was Abercrombie's third appointment to the supreme court. [3] On March 17,2014,his nomination was approved by the Hawaii Senate by a 23–1 vote. [5] [6] He was sworn into office on April 17,2014. [7] He retired from the court on March 31,2023. [8]
Simeon Rivera Acoba Jr. was an Associate Justice of the Hawaii State Supreme Court. Acoba served his first term from May 19,2000,to May 18,2010,and was retained by the Judicial Selection Commission to serve a second ten-year term from May 19,2010,to May 18,2020. He retired from the court effective February 29,2014.
The United States District Court for the District of Hawaii is the principal trial court of the United States Federal Court System in the state of Hawaii. The court's territorial jurisdiction encompasses the state of Hawaii and the territories of Midway Atoll,Wake Island,Johnston Atoll,Kingman Reef,Palmyra Atoll,Baker Island,Howland Island,and Jarvis Island;it also occasionally handles federal issues that arise in the territory of American Samoa,which has no local federal court or territorial court. It is located at the Prince Kuhio Federal Building in downtown Honolulu,fronting the Aloha Tower and Honolulu Harbor. The court hears both civil and criminal cases as a court of law and equity. A branch of the district court is the United States Bankruptcy Court which also has chambers in the federal building. The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit has appellate jurisdiction over cases coming out of the District of Hawaii. The United States Attorney for the District of Hawaii represents the United States in all civil and criminal cases within her district.
Same-sex marriage has been legal in Hawaii since December 2,2013. The Hawaii State Legislature held a special session beginning on October 28,2013,and passed the Hawaii Marriage Equality Act legalizing same-sex marriage. Governor Neil Abercrombie signed the legislation on November 13,and same-sex couples began marrying on December 2. Hawaii also allows both same-sex and opposite-sex couples to formalize their relationships legally in the form of civil unions and reciprocal beneficiary relationships. Civil unions provide the same rights,benefits,and obligations of marriage at the state level,while reciprocal beneficiary relationships provide a more limited set of rights. Hawaii was the fifteenth U.S. state to legalize same-sex marriage.
