Michael Davenport (diplomat)

Michael Hayward Davenport MBE (born 25 September 1961) is a British diplomat, who served as British Ambassador to Kuwait. [1] In 2021 he became the head of the OSCE Mission in Kosovo. [2]

Davenport studied French and German at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge University. He lectured at Graz University in Austria from 1983 to 1984 and then trained as a solicitor at Macfarlanes in London. [3]

He changed careers to join the Foreign Office in 1988, starting as a Desk Officer in the East Africa Department. [1] He served in Russia and Poland, where he was Consul-General and Direction of Trade Promotion (2000–2003), then as Deputy Head of Mission in Cairo. From 2010 to 2013 he served as British Ambassador to Serbia and from 2013 to 2017 as EU Ambassador and Head of the EU Delegation in Serbia. He is an Honorary Citizen of Pančevo, Serbia. In October 2017 he presented his credentials to Sheikh Sabah, Amir of Kuwait as British Ambassador to the State of Kuwait. [1] He was succeeded by Belinda Lewis in April 2021. [4]

The Račak massacre or Račak operation was the massacre of 45 Kosovo Albanians that took place in the village of Račak in central Kosovo in January 1999. The massacre was perpetrated by Serbian security forces in response to Albanian separatist activity in the region. The Serbian government refused to let a war crimes prosecutor visit the site, and maintained that the casualties were all members of the rebel Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) killed in combat with state security forces.
