Essex County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Essex. Founded in 1876, the club had minor county status until 1894 when it was promoted to first-class status pending its entry into the County Championship in 1895, since then the team has played in every top-level domestic cricket competition in England. Essex currently play all their home games at the County Cricket Ground, Chelmsford. The club has formerly used other venues throughout the county including Lower Castle Park in Colchester, Valentines Park in Ilford, Leyton Cricket Ground, the Gidea Park Sports Ground in Romford, and Garon Park and Southchurch Park, both in Southend. Its limited overs team is called the Essex Eagles.
Billy Ashley Godleman is an English first-class cricketer who plays for Derbyshire and is the team captain. He is a left-handed batsman and a right-arm leg-spin bowler. He played for Middlesex and Essex before joining Derbyshire in 2013. Godleman has previously represented the England under-19 team.

Michael Burns is an English first-class list cricket umpire and former first-class cricketer who played county cricket for Warwickshire and Somerset in a first-class career which spanned from 1992 until 2005. He also played Minor Counties cricket for Cumberland and Cornwall. An adaptable cricketer, he appeared for Cumberland and Warwickshire as a wicket-keeper, but when he moved to Somerset he developed into an aggressive batsman who bowled at medium-pace when needed.
John Wilfrid Greenstock was an English first-class cricketer who played in 46 matches in the 1920s, the bulk of these for Oxford University and Worcestershire.

Gilbert Ashton MC was an English cricketer who played 62 first-class matches between the wars, mostly for Cambridge University and Worcestershire. His obituary in Wisden called him "a fine, aggressive stroke-player" and praised his fielding ability at cover point. His bowling was of the occasional variety, and after he left Cambridge became essentially non-existent.

He also played for these teams in List A games and he also played List A games for Hertfordshire. His highest score in First-class cricket of 35 came when playing for Essex in the match against Northamptonshire County Cricket Club. His best bowling in First-class cricket of 7/47 came when playing for Essex in the match against Lancashire County Cricket Club. His highest List A score of 32 came when playing for Essex against Yorkshire County Cricket Club. His best bowling of 5/24 in List A cricket came when playing for Essex in a match against Hampshire County Cricket Club.
Michael Stephen Anthony McEvoy is an Indian-born former English first-class cricketer who played first-class and List A cricket between 1976 and 1990, with the bulk of his career being between 1980 and 1984.
Claud Neville Woolley was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Gloucestershire and Northamptonshire. He also served as a first-class umpire and stood in one Test during the 1948 Ashes series. A right-handed batsman and right-arm slow-medium bowler, he was the older brother of Frank who had a more successful playing career, including representing England in 64 Tests.
Garnet Morley Lee was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Nottinghamshire between 1910 and 1922 and for Derbyshire between 1925 and 1933. He scored nearly 15,000 runs in his first-class career.
Frank Henry Vigar was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Essex County Cricket Club between 1938 and 1954. A right-handed batsman, and leg break bowler, Vigar served as an all-rounder with 8,858 runs at 26.28 and 241 wickets at 37.90. From his rained-off debut in 1938, Vigar went on to play 257 matches for his county. His greatest success came in the "golden summer" of 1947, where he scored 1,735 runs and took 64 wickets. A partnership with Peter Smith of 218 for the final wicket remains an Essex record.

Newton enjoyed a prolific cricket record while at school and was tipped by The Wisden Cricketer as 'one to watch'. He made his Northamptonshire first-team debut in 2009.

Albert Edward Nutter was an English cricketer who played over 200 first-class matches, mostly for Lancashire and Northamptonshire. He was a right-handed batsman and bowled at a medium fast pace. Born in the town of Burnley, he made his first-class debut for Lancashire in August 1935 at the age of 22. Nutter spent 10 years with Lancashire, during which time he played 70 matches for the side. In June 1939, he achieved his highest ever first-class score of 109 not out in the County Championship match against Nottinghamshire. During the same summer he spent one match as the club professional at Accrington Cricket Club in the Lancashire League.

He made his one day debut for Northamptonshire against Essex, on 8 August 2010. He has since played four first-class matches for Leeds-Bradford MCCU, and played for Sussex in one day and first-class cricket. In July 2016 he scored the record individual score for Sussex 2nd XI, 258* against Glamorgan 2nd XI at Abergavenny
