Michael Robert Garth Lampard (born March 1986) is an Australian opera singer, conductor and composer born in Hobart, Tasmania.

Education and early acclaim

Lampard undertook vocal study from a young age and acquired early notoriety as a boy soprano, [1] performing in national broadcasts and with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. As his voice matured it settled into the baritone register and became quite an unusually robust and powerful voice for his early age. He continued his study at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music [2] with his lifelong teacher Suzanne Ortuso, [3] where he completed a bachelor of music with first class honors. His rich vocal tone led him to early recognition in international competitions where in 2007 he was flown to Paris to perform in a competition for Plácido Domingo [4] and in 2009 where as the result of being a major prize winner in the Australian Singing Competition, he was flown to the Czech Republic to record arias with the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra. Career

Lampard has performed as soloist with the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Hobart Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra Pasdeloup, Rome Festival Orchestra, The Melbourne Opera Company, Alexander Productions, Bel Canto Young Opera, IHOS Opera, Ice Breaker Productions (Adelaide), Daylight Robbery Theatricals, Tasmanian University Musical Society, Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music Symphony Orchestra and Concert Choir, Tasmanian Chorale, Launceston Philharmonic Society, The Friends Singers, Camberwell Chorale and the Hobart Orpheus Choir. Conductors he has worked with include Richard Bonynge, Plácido Domingo, Fritz Maraffi, Simon Kenway, Timothy Sexton, Jean Louis Forestier, Gary Wain, Myer Fredman, Carol Nies, Jonathon Grieves Smith and Simon Reade.

In 2005 Lampard appeared in the role of Guglielmo from the Mozart opera Così fan tutte at the Rome Opera Festival. Michael was selected through international audition and is the first Australian singer to be involved with this festival. [7]

As a conductor Lampard has worked with several of Tasmania's musical organizations including the Hobart Orpheus Choir, the Derwent Symphony Orchestra and in 2009 Michael conducted, to critical acclaim' [8] the world premiere of Thanapoom Sirichang opera "The Lunch Box" for IHOS Opera as part of the 10 Days on the Island Festival.

Lampard has also had success as composer having written several operas, choral works and song cycles. Many of his works have been performed in Australia and overseas [9] including the premiere of his first opera Succubus by the IHOS Opera Laboratory. [10] Recent commissions include a chamber work for piano quintet and voice and operatic mono-drama based on Edgar Allan Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart.

In 2010 Michael Lampard founded Hip-Pocket Opera, a small chamber opera company based in Hobart, Tasmania.

The Hobart Chamber Orchestra (HCO) is a chamber orchestra based in Hobart, Tasmania. HCO was formed by a group of Hobart string players and conductor Reg Chapman in 1987. Annual programming of at least four concerts provides performance opportunities for student musicians, musicians pursuing other careers and semi-professional and retired musicians. The ensemble also provides soloist performance opportunities for Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra members and exceptional music graduates alike and regularly collaborates with the Tasmanian Chorale and soloists to perform choral repertoire. Guest conductors have included Myer Fredman, Jean-Louis Forestier, Christopher Martin, Gary Wain, Phillip Taylor and Joseph Ortuso, and the orchestra regularly performs under the direction of violinist, Peter Tanfield. The HCO has commissioned works by composers including Matthew Dewey, Don Kay, Dylan Sheridan and Thanapoom Sirichang.

Southern Gospel Choir

The Southern Gospel Choir is a gospel choir based at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music in Hobart, Tasmania, and is directed by Dr. Andrew Legg.

Tesla – Lightning in His Hand is a large-scale opera about Serbian American engineer and inventor Nikola Tesla (1856–1943), composed by Constantine Koukias, a Tasmanian composer and opera director of Greek ancestry based in Amsterdam, where he is known by his Greek name of Konstantin Koukias, with libretto by Marianne Fisher.

The Lunch Box is a chamber opera by Thai composer Thanapoom Sirichang and Thai librettist Bringkop Vora-Urai. Composed entirely in Tasmania under the guidance of IHOS Artistic Director Constantine Koukias, The Lunch Box may be the first opera sung in Thai to blend traditional Thai music and contemporary Western opera.

Thanapoom Sirichang is a Tasmanian composer, born in the city of Chiang Mai, Thailand. He began his music study at the age of eight by joining the Prince Royals College Ensemble. He studied music with Gain Tepparat and Yutthapol Sakthamjareon until he finished college in 1998. Sirichang completed a Bachelor Music degree with first class honours in 2002 at the Payap University in Chiang Mai before completing a Masters of Music in Composition in 2006 with Professor Douglas Knehans at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music. He now lives in Melbourne, Victoria.

Andrew Keith Wailes is an Australian conductor and music director. Winner of the Australasian International Choral Conducting Competition in Brisbane in 1999, he is the current artistic director and Chief Conductor of the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra, Principal Conductor of the Melbourne University Choral Society, and music director and Conductor of the Box Hill Chorale. From 1999 to 2020 he served as artistic director of The Australian Children's Choir, and for a decade was Director of the Australian Catholic University Melbourne Campus Choir. IHOS Music Theatre and Opera is a Tasmanian opera company was established in Hobart in 1990, by composer and artistic director Constantine Koukias, and production director Werner Ihlenfeld to create original music-theatre and opera works.
