The North Sydney Bears are an Australian rugby league football club based on Sydney's North Shore. The club competes in the NSW Cup, having exited the National Rugby League following the 1999 NRL season after 90 years in the premier rugby league competition in Australia. There have been on-going bids to resurrect the club in the NRL as either The Bears, based in Perth and Sydney, or as the Central Coast Bears, based at Gosford. However, as of November 2024, the bid to be based Perth is the Favourite. However, the bid is partnership and not officially considered a relocation. The North Sydney Bears are expected to keep their headquarters in Cammeray, or at least on Sydney’s North Shore
The Balmain Tigers are a rugby league club based in the inner-western Sydney suburb of Balmain. They were a founding member of the New South Wales Rugby League and one of the most successful in the history of the premiership, with eleven titles. In 1999 they formed a joint venture club with the Western Suburbs Magpies club to form the Wests Tigers for competition in the National Rugby League (NRL). They no longer field any senior teams in the lower divisions. At the time of the joint venture only South Sydney Rabbitohs and the St George Dragons had won more titles than the Tigers.
The Glebe Dirty Reds are an Australian rugby league foundation club which played in the New South Wales Rugby Football League's Sydney premiership, the major competition for the sport in Sydney, from 1908 until their exit at the end of 1929. They were formed on 9 January 1908, with some sources suggesting that they may have been the first Sydney rugby league club to have been created. They were nicknamed and well known as the "Dirty Reds" due to the maroon colour of their playing jerseys.
Leichhardt Oval is a rugby league and soccer stadium in Lilyfield, New South Wales, Australia. It is currently one of three home grounds for the Wests Tigers National Rugby League (NRL) team, along with Campbelltown Stadium and Western Sydney Stadium. Prior to its merger with the Western Suburbs Magpies, it was the longtime home of the Balmain Tigers, who used the ground from 1934–1994 and 1997–1999. It was named after Ludwig Leichhardt.
Mark O'Neill is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1990s and 2000s. He played in Australia for the Balmain Tigers, then the Wests Tigers following the joint venture of Balmain and the Western Suburbs Magpies, and in England for the Leeds Rhinos and the Hull Kingston Rovers in the Super League. O'Neill usually played as a second-row. O'Neill held the NSWRL/NRL record for the most first grade games played before competing in a finals match which stood at 219 games before this was overtaken by Luke Brooks. He is currently the General Manager of football at Parramatta Eels NRL.
Terence John Lamb, also nicknamed "Baa", is an Australian former rugby league footballer and coach. He played 350 games, with the Western Suburbs (1980–1983) and Canterbury (1984–1996).
Troy Wozniak is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer in the Australasian National Rugby League (NRL) competition. He played for the Balmain Tigers, Parramatta Eels and Wests Tigers as well as Widnes Vikings in the Super League. Wozniak was primarily a utility player.
The 1909 New South Wales Rugby Football League premiership was the second season of Sydney's top-level rugby league football competition, Australia's first. Eight teams contested during the season for the premiership and the Royal Agricultural Society Challenge Shield; seven teams from Sydney and one team from Newcastle, New South Wales.
The 1989 NSWRL season was the 82nd season of professional rugby league football in Australia. Sixteen clubs competed for the New South Wales Rugby League's J.J. Giltinan Shield and Winfield Cup Premiership during the season, which culminated in a grand final between Balmain and Canberra. This season NSWRL teams also competed for the 1989 Panasonic Cup. This would be the last time a mid-season competition was played concurrent with the regular season. From 1990 it would become a pre-season competition.
The 1988 NSWRL season was the 81st season of professional rugby league football in Australia, and saw the first expansion of the New South Wales Rugby League Premiership outside the borders of New South Wales, and another expansion outside of Sydney, with the addition of three new teams: the Brisbane Broncos, Newcastle Knights and Gold Coast-Tweed Giants. The largest NSWRL premiership yet, sixteen clubs competed during the 1988 season, with the J J Giltinan Shield for minor premiers going to Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks. The finals culminated in a grand final for the Winfield Cup between the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and Balmain Tigers. This season NSWRL teams also competed for the 1988 Panasonic Cup.
Drummoyne Oval is a multi-use sports ground in the Sydney inner-west suburb of Drummoyne, New South Wales. The ground has been used for international women's cricket matches, domestic men's cricket matches and first grade rugby league as well as local Australian rules football and Rugby Union games.
Graham Lyons is an Indigenous Australian, and a former professional rugby league footballer who played for South Sydney, Penrith and Balmain in the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) competition. Lyons primarily played on the wing but spent the majority of the 1989 season in the centres. He is the cousin of fellow rugby league player Cliff Lyons.
David Brooks is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s and 1990s. A one-club man, Brooks played his first-grade career primarily with the Balmain Tigers in the New South Wales Rugby League premiership, with a couple of short stints in England in the off-season with Hull FC and later with Chorley Borough. Brooks primarily played in the second-row.
Jack Leveson (1882-1949) was an Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1900s and 1910s. He played for South Sydney in the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) competition. Leveson was a foundation player for South Sydney playing in the club's first ever game.
Michael Blake is a former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1970s and 1980s. He played for Manly-Warringah, Canberra Raiders and South Sydney in the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) competition.
Edmund Beaver was an Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1930s. He played for Balmain in the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) competition.
John Davidson is an Australian former rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s and 1990s. He played for Balmain and Cronulla-Sutherland in the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) competition. His brother Jamie Davidson also played for Balmain between 1983 and 1987.
George Bishop (1902-1972) was an Australian professional rugby league footballer of the 1920s and 1930s, and referee of the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. He played for Balmain, primarily as a hooker, and earned selection for the Australian national team. He later became a well known referee in the New South Wales Rugby Football League (NSWRFL) competition.
David Cruickshank is an Australian former rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s. He played for South Sydney and Eastern Suburbs in the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) competition, plus for Fulham RLFC and Salford in England in 1990-91.
Gary Edwards is an Australian former rugby league footballer who played in the 1990s. He played for the Balmain and North Sydney in the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) and ARL competitions.
