Michael "Mick" Moran (born 16 August 1983) is a former rugby league player. He played for the South Sydney Rabbitohs. [1]
Moran debuted in the 2005 season, in South Sydney's round 9 match against the St. George Illawarra Dragons. [2] He showed promise in his first season, playing 11 games, and signed on to another contract until the end of 2007 midway through the year. [1] [2] However, he failed to play a single game in the 2006 season. [1] His contract was terminated midway through the 2006 season more than a year before it was due to expire for unspecified disciplinary reasons. [3]
Moran later signed on with the Maitland Pickers in the Newcastle Rugby League, winning two Grand Finals with them, in 2010 and 2011. [4] Special attention was drawn to his performance in the 2011 Grand Final, where he kicked the winning field goal during Golden point. [5] He later moved to the Macquarie Scorpions. [5] Moran retired from rugby league prior to the 2016 season. [6]
Newcastle were a rugby league team who played in the New South Wales Rugby Football League premiership from 1908–1909, one of the nine foundation clubs. After the formation of several clubs in January 1908, members of the NSWRFL came to Newcastle to hold talks with the local footballing community at a meeting on 8 February 1908. However, at this meeting the motion to have a public meeting was lost. The local rugby union fraternity threatened sanctions and further recruitment occurred in secret. Finally a band of Rebel Pioneers assembled and signed up on 10 April, just days before the start of the competition.

On 23 March, the NRL announced that the season would be suspended after round 2, until further notice due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The NRL returned on 28 May with a new draw, the Knights' round 3 game coming on 31 May against the Penrith Panthers. The Knights finished the regular season in 7th place, thus reaching the finals but were knocked out after losing to the South Sydney Rabbitohs in week 1.

Coached by Adam O'Brien and co-captained by Jayden Brailey, Kalyn Ponga and Daniel Saifiti, they competed in the NRL's 2021 Telstra Premiership. In July, the NRL relocated the competition to Queensland to avoid an outbreak of the Deltra variant COVID-19 virus in New South Wales. The Knights finished the regular season in 7th place, thus reaching the finals but were knocked out after losing to the Parramatta Eels in week 1.
