Built on the site of the ancient Island Carib village of Sairi, it is the oldest and most important urban settlement on the island of Dominica.

It is not part of any ecclesiastical province, but immediately subject to the Holy See and depends on the Congregation for the Oriental Churches.

Kelvin Edward Cardinal Felix, OBE, SLMH, DAH is the Roman Catholic Archbishop emeritus of Castries. He was born in Roseau, Dominica, on 15 February 1933. He became a cardinal at the papal consistory held on 22 February 2014.

Edward Joseph Gilbert is a 20th and 21st century American born bishop of the Catholic Church in the Antilles. He served as bishop of the Diocese of Roseau in Dominica, from 1994-2001. He was the Archbishop of Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago between 2001-2011.
Michael Monaghan was an Irish clergyman and bishop for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Roseau, Dominica. He was appointed bishop in 1851. Educated for the priesthood at St. Patrick's College, Maynooth. He was ordained a bishop in 1852 by fellow Ardagh man, Bishiop of Port of Spain Richard Patrick Smith. He died in 1855.
Gabriel Malzaire is a Saint Lucian clergyman and bishop for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Roseau. He was ordained in 1985 and was appointed bishop in 2002. While he had previously opposed efforts to repeal laws against homosexuality Roseau, in 2021 he changed course and began to oppose those who opposed laws opposing homosexuality. On 11 February 2022, he was appointed Archbishop of Castries, to be installed on 24 April.

Sometimes referred to as "French Dominique", Dominica also shares close ties with its nearest neighbours, the overseas departments of the French Republic, Guadeloupe to the north and Martinique to the south. At present, Dominica is connected to the French islands by an inter-island express ferry. Under the auspice of the European Union both Dominica and France are tied economically via a 2008 concluded multilateral Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) trade-deal representing many Caribbean nations under the name CARIFORUM. They are further members of: The Association of Caribbean States (ACS), the Caribbean Postal Union, the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, and the United Nations.
