Michael Please (born 1984) is an English animator, illustrator, director, and writer.

Biography

An alumnus of the Royal College of Art (MA Animation) and the University of the Arts London (BA Technical Arts and Special Effects), Please has made several music videos and short films including his BAFTA winning (2011: Best Short Animation) RCA graduation film, The Eagleman Stag . [1] [2] [3] In 2014 Please co-founded East London-based Parabella Animation Studio alongside fellow RCA graduate Dan Ojari. [4]

He also worked as episode director for Cartoon Network's Elliott from Earth and co-writer and director of Aardman Animations stop motion special Robin Robin for Netflix. He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. [5]

Short films

The Eagleman Stag (2010)

The Eagleman Stag , follows an entomologist as he contemplates the nature of time and possibility of eternal life. After premiering at The Sundance Film Festival [6] The Eagleman Stag went on to win the BAFTA for Best Animated Short in 2011. [7] During its festival run the film picked up a further 23 international awards, [8] was Film of the Year on Short of the Week [9] and eventually shortlisted for an Academy Award. [10]

Marilyn Myller (2014)

His following film Marilyn Myller, followed a sculptor struggling with the expectation of making art and the disappointing reality. [11] The film was developed during a 3-month artist's residency at Japic (Japan), and co-produced by Blink Ink in London & Hornet Inc in New York. [12] Marilyn Myller premiered at Sundance in 2014 [13] and won Best of Fest at Melbourne International Film Festival, [14] Best short film at the British Animation Awards, [15] Best of British Animation at Encounters Film Festival, Special Jury Prize at the Chicago international Film festival [16] and the McLaren Award for Best British Animation at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. [17]

Other shorts include The Jolly Dot, Goodness Newness Oldness Badness, Glens Gloves, Crone and Spectacular View.

Music videos

Please has directed several music videos for music artists such as Jeffrey Lewis (2008), [18] M Ward, (2008) [19] and Ingrid Michaelson (2009) [20] as well as illustrating album art.

In 2010 he was approached by TV on the Radio to direct the video for Second Song, [21] a segment of their album length film - ‘9 Types of Light’, which was later nominated for a Grammy Award. [22] In 2018 he co-directed (with Dan Ojari) the opening and closing segment for Kamasi Washington's album length film ‘As told to G/D thyself’  which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2019 and was nominated for an MVA. [23]

Long Form

Zero Greg (2014)

Please was commissioned by Film 4 to write and develop a family animated feature, produced by Mary Burke for Warp Films. The script, entitled ‘Zero Greg’, featured a young boy unaffected by Gravity. [24]

Alan the Infinite (2019)

Please & Ojari produced, wrote and directed an 11-minute stopmotion TV pilot about an intern at a lamination company who discovers the 'infinity particle'. The project was a co-production between Parabella and Blink Industries.

Elliott from Earth (2020)

Please joined Cartoon Network in 2019 as Episode Director on Elliot From Earth (16 x 11min episodes).

Robin Robin (2021)

In 2019, Netflix commissioned a 30-minute stopmotion special, co-written and directed by Please and Ojari, and produced by Aardman Animations about a young bird raised by a family of burglar mice. The film, Robin Robin was released in 2021. [25] It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. A picture book written by Please and Ojari and illustrated by Briony May Smith, accompanied the release, [26] published by Macmillian.

Chicken Run is a 2000 stop-motion animated adventure comedy film produced by Pathé and Aardman Animations in partnership with DreamWorks Animation. Aardman's first feature-length film, it was directed by Peter Lord and Nick Park from a screenplay by Karey Kirkpatrick and based on an original story by Lord and Park. The film stars the voices of Julia Sawalha, Mel Gibson, Tony Haygarth, Miranda Richardson, Phil Daniels, Lynn Ferguson, Timothy Spall, Imelda Staunton, and Benjamin Whitrow. Set in the countryside of Yorkshire, the plot centres on a group of British anthropomorphic chickens who see an American rooster named Rocky Rhodes as their only hope to escape the farm when their owners want to turn them into chicken pies.

Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit is a 2005 stop-motion animated comedy film directed by Nick Park and Steve Box and produced by DreamWorks Animation and Aardman Animations as the second feature-length film by Aardman, after Chicken Run (2000). It was the last DreamWorks Animation film to be distributed by DreamWorks Pictures, as the studio spun off as an independent studio in 2004 until its acquisition by NBCUniversal in 2016. The film debuted in Sydney, Australia on 4 September 2005, before being released in theaters in the United States on 7 October 2005 and in the United Kingdom a week later on 14 October 2005.

Purple and Brown is a British stop-motion animated short series made in collaboration with Nickelodeon and Aardman Animations, the creators of Wallace and Gromit. The series was devised and directed by Rich Webber and edited by Mike Percival, who also offered the voices of the characters, and first aired in February 2006, on Nickelodeon's UK and Ireland channel, and then later became a staple on the US Nickelodeon network as part of its former Nick Extra short program.

The Eagleman Stag is a 9-minute-long stop motion animated film by Michael Please. It is a darkly comic take on a man's obsession with the quickening perception of time that faces us as we age and his attempts to counter this effect. It won the BAFTA for the Best Short Animation (2011).

Triggerfish is a computer animation film studio based in Cape Town, South Africa and Galway, Ireland. The studio is best known for its animated feature films Adventures in Zambezia (2012), Khumba (2013), and Seal Team (2021), as well as the work they have done on television specials created for UK producers Magic Light Pictures. In 2016, Stick Man was awarded the Cristal for best TV production at the Annecy International Animation Festival. In 2017, Revolting Rhymes again won the Cristal for best TV production at the Annecy Festival, and was nominated for the Best Short Film (Animated) Oscar at the 2018 Academy Awards. In 2019, Netflix announced that Triggerfish would produce its first African animated TV series. In 2020, Zog won the International Emmy for Best Kids Animation. In 2021, The Snail and The Whale won Best Special Production at The Annie Awards, while Triggerfish received the Mifa Animation Industry Award at Annecy for "the pioneering role that the company has played in animation in South Africa, and Africa most widely.” In 2022, their third film, Seal Team, made the Netflix Top 10 Films global list for its launch week.

<i>Shaun the Sheep Movie</i> 2015 film

Shaun the Sheep Movie is a 2015 stop-motion animated adventure comedy film written and directed by Richard Starzak and Mark Burton. It is based on the British television series Shaun the Sheep, in turn a spin-off of the Wallace and Gromit film A Close Shave (1995). Starring the voices of Justin Fletcher, John Sparkes, and Omid Djalili, the film follows Shaun and his flock navigating the big city to save their amnesiac farmer, while an overzealous animal control worker pursues the group. It was produced by Aardman Animations, and financed by StudioCanal in association with Anton Capital Entertainment.

Adam is a 1992 British stop-motion clay animated short film written, animated and directed by Peter Lord of Aardman Animations. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short and the BAFTA Film Award for Short Animation in 1992, and won two awards at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in 1993. It is based on the beginning of the Book of Genesis. It was distributed by Aardman Animations.
