Rear Admiral Michael John Slattery, AM (born 1954) is a Royal Australian Naval Reserve officer and lawyer. He has been a justice of the Supreme Court of New South Wales since 2009 and the Judge Advocate General of the Australian Defence Force since July 2014. [1]
Slattery graduated from the University of Sydney with degrees in arts (1975) and law (1977). He became a barrister in 1978,Queen's Counsel in 1992 and justice of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 2009. He joined the Royal Australian Navy Reserve as a Lieutenant in Supply Branch –Legal in 1990. He rose through the ranks and was appointed Judge Advocate General –Navy (as commodore) in 2010 and Judge Advocate General –ADF (as rear admiral) in 2014. [2]
Slattery has been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) twice:he was appointed in the Military Division in the 2019 Queen's Birthday Honours for "exceptional service to military law". [3] In the 2022 Australia Day Honours,Slattery was again appointed a Member,this time in the General Division,for "significant service to the law,to the judiciary,and to professional legal associations". Investigated by the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) in 2009,Smith was found by the commission to have engaged in corrupt conduct. The case was referred to the Department of Public Prosecutions,and he was jailed for up to two years after pleading guilty before the District Court of New South Wales to one charge of cheating or defrauding Sydney Ferries.
The Judge Advocate General (JAG) of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) is an office created by the Defence Force Discipline Act (1982),held by a judge or former judge of a federal court or a state supreme court. The appointment of JAG is made by the Governor-General-in-Council. The JAG may make procedural rules for tribunals that operate within the Navy,Army,and Air Force,provide the final legal review of proceedings within the ADF,participate in the appointment of judge advocates,Defence Force magistrates,presidents and members of courts martial,and legal officers for various purposes,and reporting upon the operation of laws relating to the discipline of the ADF.
Richard Ross Sinclair Tracey was an Australian military and civil judge and barrister,who was Judge Advocate General of the Australian Defence Force from 2007 to 2014,and a judge of the Federal Court of Australia from 2006 to 2018. Following his retirement from the Federal Court,Tracey was appointed as a commissioner of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety,however he died of cancer before the commission provided its interim report.
