Sir Michael John Snyder (born 30 July 1950) is a British businessman and politician. He is Assistant Grand Master of the United grand Lodge of England, having previously been Metropolitan Grand Master of the Freemasons of London.

Business career

Snyder joined Kingston Smith as a trainee in 1968 and became a managing partner in 1979. He played a leadership role in the company, becoming a senior partner in 1990. He stepped down from the board in 2016, but was retained as a consultant. [1] In 2015 he joined the board of Metro Bank with a view to developing Metro Bank’s small business lending operations. [2]

Political career

Snyder is a politician in the City of London and has served as an elected representative for Cordwainer Ward on the Court of Common Council since 1986. [3] [4] He served as chairman of the Policy and Resources Committee from 2003 to 2008, as well as the Finance Committee, and the Barbican Estate Committee. He is currently the chairman of the Capital Buildings Committee. He was knighted in 2008 for services to Business and to the City of London Corporation.

Freemasonry

Snyder served as Metropolitan Grand Master of the Freemasons of London since December 2015., [5] [6] and in 2024 was promoted to become one of two Assistant Grand Masters of the United Grand Lodge of England.

Personal life

Snyder was born on 30 July 1950. [7] He was educated at Brentwood School, Essex, where he is now a governor. [8]

The relationship between Mormonism and Freemasonry began early in the life of Joseph Smith, founder of the Latter Day Saint movement. Smith's older brother, Hyrum, and possibly his father, Joseph, Sr. were Freemasons while the family lived near Palmyra, New York. David Ian Liddell-Grainger of Ayton Castle, in Berwickshire, was a prominent freemason who served as Grand Master Mason of the Grand Lodge of Scotland from 1969 until 1974. In 1955 he was created an Officer of St John of Jerusalem and in 1974 a Knight of St John of Jerusalem and served in the Royal Company of Archers between 1955 and 1983. He was a member of Berwickshire County Council from 1958 to 1973 and was a Deputy Lieutenant of Berwickshire between 1963 and 1985. Much of his family's wealth derived from his great-great grandfather Richard Grainger (1797-1861) “visionary and builder” the creator of much of the present centre of the City of Newcastle, “the prime mover behind one of the most significant exercises in urban planning in the middle decades of the 19th century and a builder and speculator unparalleled in the region”. He married Anne Mary Sibylla Abel Smith, a third cousin of Queen Elizabeth II.
