Otago Peninsula

The Otago Peninsula is a long, hilly indented finger of land that forms the easternmost part of Dunedin, New Zealand. Volcanic in origin, it forms one wall of the eroded valley that now forms Otago Harbour. Hori Kerei Taiaroa

Hori Kerei Taiaroa, also known as Huriwhenua, was a Māori member of the New Zealand parliament and the Paramount Chief of the southern iwi of Ngāi Tahu. The son of Ngāi Tahu leader Te Matenga Taiaroa and Mawera Taiaroa, he was born at Otakau on the Otago Peninsula in the 1830s or early 1840s.

HMS <i>Taiaroa</i> (1883)

HMS Taiaroa was a colonial service Defender-class torpedo boat designed by Thornycroft & Company for the defence of New Zealand. She was named after Te Matenga Taiaroa, a 19th-century Māori chief of the Ngāi Tahu iwi. She was built at Chiswick in 1883 and shipped to New Zealand, where she was assigned to the defence of Port Chalmers.

John Taiaroa

John Grey "Jack" Taiaroa, of Ngāi Tahu descent, was a New Zealand rugby union player. A halfback, he played nine matches for the New Zealand national team in 1884—the warm-up in Wellington and all eight matches of the tour of New South Wales; New Zealand won all eight games. There were no test matches on the tour, as there was not yet an Australian national team, and would not be until 1903.

Taiaroa is a genus of deep-water, solitary marine octocorals in the family Taiaroidae. Taiaroa is monotypic in the family Taiaroidae and contains a single species, Taiaroa tauhou. The species was first described by the marine zoologists Frederick M. Bayer and Katherine Margaret Muzik in 1976. The scientific name derives from "Taiaroa", the submarine canyon off New Zealand in which the first specimens were found and "tauhou", the Maori word for "strange".

SS <i>Taiaroa</i>

The SS Taiaroa was 228 ton Union Steam ship coaster that grounded near the Clarence River on 11 April 1886. Thirty six people, 15 passengers and 21 crew, total lost their lives when they abandoned the boat after it had grounded.

Michael Bracewell is a New Zealand cricketer who plays for Wellington. He is the nephew of former test players Brendon and John Bracewell, and the cousin of current international player Doug Bracewell.
