Michele Denise Hotten (born April 20,1954) is a senior justice of the Supreme Court of Maryland appointed by Governor Larry Hogan.
The first in her immediate family to attend college, [1] Hotten received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of South Florida in 1975 and her Juris Doctor from the Howard University School of Law in 1979. [2]
Hotten served as a circuit court judge in Prince George's for 16 years and spent one year as a district court judge. She worked as an assistant state's attorney in Prince George's and served as deputy people's zoning counsel and as a hearing examiner for the county Board of Education. She also has worked in private practice. [1]
She was previously a judge on the Maryland Court of Special Appeals. She was appointed to that court by Governor Martin O'Malley on July 23,2010,to fill the vacancy left by James Salmon.
On December 1,2015,Governor Larry Hogan appointed Hotten to fill the vacancy left by the retirement of Judge Glenn T. Harrell Jr. [3] She was sworn into office on December 22,2015. [1]
At the time of her appointment,she was the fifth woman on the seven-judge panel,which has the highest number of women the court has ever had. She also was the second African American woman appointed to the court,after Judge Shirley M. Watts,who was appointed prior to her. [1]
Hotton became a senior justice in April 2024,after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70. [4]
Hotten grew up poor in Southeast Washington,raised by a single mother who often worked three jobs to make ends meet. [1]
The Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia is the state supreme court of the state of West Virginia,the highest of West Virginia's state courts. The court sits primarily at the West Virginia State Capitol in Charleston,although from 1873 to 1915,it was also required by state law to hold sessions in Charles Town in the state's Eastern Panhandle. The court also holds special sittings at various locations across the state.
LeRoy Francis Millette Jr. is a senior justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia. Millette was appointed to the Court by Virginia Governor Tim Kaine to fill a vacancy created by the retirement of Justice G. Steven Agee,who had been appointed to the federal 4th Circuit Court of Appeals. On February 11,2009,Millette was confirmed for a full 12-year term by the Virginia General Assembly beginning retroactive to February 1,2009. He entered senior service in 2015. Millette previously served for less than one year on the Court of Appeals of Virginia,also having been appointed by Governor Kaine and then being subsequently confirmed by the General Assembly. Prior to that,he served as a judge of the Circuit Court of Prince William County,Virginia,in which position he presided over the capital murder trial of John Allen Muhammad,the infamous Beltway Sniper. Millette confirmed the jury's sentence of death of Muhammad. Millette also was involved in some of the proceedings of the Lorena Bobbitt trial in 1993. Prior to serving on the Circuit Court,he was a general district court judge,making him one of only three Virginia jurists,along with Justice Lawrence L. Koontz Jr. and Justice Barbara Milano Keenan,to have served at all four levels of courts in Virginia. He received his undergraduate degree from the College of William and Mary and his Juris Doctor degree from the Marshall–Wythe School of Law at William and Mary. Millette is married to M. Elizabeth O’Brien Millette and they have two children,Lauren Elizabeth Millette and LeRoy F. Millette III.

Previously a deputy Colorado attorney general,she was appointed by Governor Bill Ritter to the Supreme Court in 2010 to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Chief Justice Mary Mullarkey. She was sworn in on December 10,2010.
