Early beginnings
Midnight Youth came together while at Rangitoto College in Auckland's North Shore with three members of the band playing together in New Zealand's high school Rockquest competition. Jeremy Redmore and Nick Campbell completed the group in mid-2006.
The band released two independent singles, "Supernatural" and "A New Day", in 2007 and played opening slots for Incubus, OK Go and a re-formed INXS in their New Zealand shows.
In 2008 they self-funded a trip to New York City to lodge and record with producer Terence Dover. With Hotbed Studios (vocals and bass) as their quarters and home base, Dover recorded them at studios across New York. Skyline Studios (drums) in Manhattan, GödelString (guitars, drums, vocals, bass) in Brooklyn, The Buddy Project (guitars and vocals) in Queens and (Grand Piano) City College's Sonic Arts Center concert hall were all unique recording environments Dover selected for their debut record The Brave Don't Run .
Signing & debut album
After recording the album, the band signed with Warner Music NZ in September 2008 and released their third single, "The Letter", to widespread acclaim across New Zealand. The song became the band's first Top 40 hit in New Zealand in January 2009, eventually peaking at #19 on the NZ singles chart and spending 17 weeks in total inside the NZ Top 40. [3]
Their follow-up single, "All On Our Own", debuted at #18 on the New Zealand RIANZ Singles Chart in March, 2009, and peaked at number six, after twelve weeks on the chart. [3] The song went on to spend another 11 weeks inside the NZ top 40 [3] and beat out international acts to be the most-played song on NZ radio for 2009. [3]
The album spawned five singles in New Zealand in total: third single "Learning To Fall" was released in June 2009, its video filmed in Manhattan, New York, fourth single "Cavalry" spent seven straight weeks at number one on rock radio in New Zealand.
The fifth single, "Golden Love", initially gave the band exposure in the United States through a feature on the season finale of One Tree Hill in May 2010 [4] before going on to have a second life after being featured in Korean TV drama Uncontrollably Fond in 2016. As of July 2018, the song has amassed over 8 million streams between Spotify and YouTube.
Midnight Youth's debut album, The Brave Don't Run , was released in New Zealand on 27 April 2009, and peaked at number two on the New Zealand Album Chart. The album was certified platinum in New Zealand in December 2009.
Midnight Youth were nominated for eight awards in the 2009 New Zealand Music Awards, including Best Album (The Brave Don't Run), Best Single ("All On Our Own") and Best Group. The band won the Best Rock Album award, Best Group award and Best Engineer Andrew Buckton.
The band gained a reputation as a top-performing festival act after playing sets at SXSW, Big Day Out, Musexpo, One Movement, Sounds of Spring, and Rhythm and Vines.
On 9 September 2011 they performed as the supporting act to Neil and Tim Finn at the opening of the 2011 Rugby World Cup waterfront stadium.
Split
On 6 September 2012 lead singer Jeremy Redmore announced that he had quit the band to pursue a solo career. [5] On 1 March 2013 the band announced they would play their last-ever show on 2 March at Home Grown via its Facebook page.
The Datsuns are a hard rock band from Cambridge, New Zealand, formed in 1998. Founding mainstays are Rudolf "Dolf" de Borst on vocals and bass guitar, and Christian Livingstone and Phil Somervell, both on guitar. They have released seven albums, with their debut self-titled album from October 2002 peaking at no. 1 in New Zealand and reaching the top 20 on the United Kingdom's Official Charts. They had relocated to London in 2002. Their second album, Outta Sight/Outta Mind, appeared at no. 7 in New Zealand and top 60 in the UK. Smoke & Mirrors (2006) peaked in the top 20 in New Zealand. Early drummer Matt Osment was replaced by Ben Cole after that album. Their top 40 singles in the UK are "In Love" and "Harmonic Generator". In New Zealand, their highest-charting single, "Stuck Here for Days" (2006), reached the top 30.
"Magic Carpet Ride" is a rock song written by John Kay and Rushton Moreve from the Canadian-American hard rock band Steppenwolf. The song was initially released in 1968 on the album The Second. It was the lead single from that album, peaking at number three in the US, and staying in the charts for 16 weeks, longer than any other Steppenwolf song.
Goodshirt are an alternative/pop/rock band from Auckland, New Zealand. The band formed when keyboardist Gareth Thomas left his computer recording setup with the Fisher brothers, Rodney and Murray, for safe keeping.
Goodnight Nurse was a New Zealand pop punk band formed in Auckland in 2001. The group originally began as a trio, but later changed to a four-piece prior to the release of their second album. It consisted of lead vocalist Joel Little, guitarist and back up vocalist Sam McCarthy, bassist Rowan Crowe, with drummer and back up vocalist Jaden Parkes.
"There's a Kind of Hush" is a popular song written by Les Reed and Geoff Stephens. Originally recorded by Stephens' group the New Vaudeville Band in 1967 as a neo-British music hall number, this version of the track became a hit in Australia and South Africa. However, in the rest of the world, a near-simultaneous cover was a big hit for Herman's Hermits. The song was a charted hit again in 1976 for The Carpenters.
Airbourne are an Australian hard rock band formed in Warrnambool, Victoria, in late 2001. Founding members are Joel O'Keeffe on lead vocals and lead guitar, his younger brother Ryan O'Keeffe on drums and David Roads on rhythm guitar and backing vocals. They were joined by Justin Street on bass guitar and backing vocals in mid-2004. Roads amicably left in 2017, Mathew Harrison joined in 2018 and after a short tenure was replaced by Jarrad Morrice on rhythm guitar and backing vocals in mid-2022, who was repalced in turn by Brett Tyrrell in mid-2023.
Villainy is an alternative rock band from Auckland, New Zealand. Formed in 2010 the band consists of James Dylan, Neill Fraser, Dave Johnston and Thom Watts.
The Temper Trap are an Australian indie rock band formed in 2005 by Dougy Mandagi, Jonathon Aherne, and Toby Dundas. In 2008, the group relocated from Melbourne to London. The band released their debut album Conditions in June 2009 to favourable reviews and commercial success; it peaked at No. 9 on the ARIA Albums Chart and into the top 30 on the UK Albums Chart. Its lead single, "Sweet Disposition", peaked in the top 10 on the Belgian, Irish and UK Singles Charts and reached No. 14 on the ARIA Singles Chart. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2010 in November, The Temper Trap won Best Group and Most Popular Australian Single for "Sweet Disposition". Their eponymous second album was released in late May/early June 2012 under Liberation Music (AUS), Infectious Records (UK) and Glassnote Records (US). The album won the band Best Rock Album, and they also won Best Group at the 2012 ARIA Awards. In October 2013 guitarist Lorenzo Sillitto left the band, during the recording of the third album.
The Brave Don't Run is the debut album of rock band Midnight Youth, released on April 27, 2009 through Warner Music. The album debuted at number two on the New Zealand Album Chart on May 3, 2009, The album features two gold singles in NZ, featuring "The Letter" & "All On Our Own".
Kids of 88 were a New Zealand new wave duo based in Auckland, New Zealand, consisting of Jordan Arts and Sam McCarthy. They are best known for their 2009 single, "My House". They have since signed through Dryden Street to Sony Music and released the album Sugarpills in August 2010. In 2014, the duo stated that 'the [Kids of 88] project has concluded.'
"Fooled Around and Fell in Love" is a song written and performed by blues guitarist Elvin Bishop with Mickey Thomas on lead vocals. It appeared on his 1975 album Struttin' My Stuff, and was released as a single the following year.
Ivy Lies is an all-female New Zealand rock band. They are best known for their hit single "Addicted". Band members are Emla Palmer, Lisa Blatchford (bass/vocals), and Rosie O'Connell (drums).
I Am Giant is a rock band based in London, United Kingdom. They formed in West Auckland, New Zealand in late 2008 and released their debut album The Horrifying Truth on 1 August 2011 in Australia and New Zealand, where it has been certified Gold and delivered four Rock Chart No. 1's. The album was released in Asia on 23 March 2012, and in Europe and US on 8 October 2012.
Avalanche City is the stage name of indie folk musician Dave Baxter from Auckland, New Zealand. He is best known for his 2011 New Zealand No. 1 single "Love, Love, Love" and his 2015 single Inside Out, which also charted at No. 1. In 2011, Dave Baxter was awarded the APRA Silver Scroll and nominated for three New Zealand Music Awards, including Breakthrough Artist of the Year, Song of the Year and Album of the Year.
Set It Off is an American rock band formed in 2008 in Tampa, Florida. The band consists of lead vocalist Cody Carson, guitarist and bassist Zach Dewall, and drummer Maxx Danziger.
Devilskin is a four-piece alternative metal band from Hamilton, New Zealand, formed in June 2010. The band consists of lead vocalist Jennie Skulander, guitarist Tony "Nail" Vincent, bassist Paul Martin and drummer Nic Martin.
Jeremy Redmore is a New Zealand musician, singer-songwriter, producer and author. In his early career he rose to fame as the main creative force behind the band Midnight Youth. Since then he has released two albums as a solo artist as well as a music-themed children's picture book.
Sticky Fingers is an Australian Indie rock band formed in 2008 in Sydney. The band consists of Dylan Frost, Paddy Cornwall (bass/vocals), Seamus Coyle, Beaker Best (drums/percussion) and Freddy Crabs (keys/synth). Former band member Taras Hrubyj-Piper (guitar/keyboards) left the band in 2009, shortly after their debut EP Helping Hand was released.
Highly Suspect is an American rock band from Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The band consists of twin brothers Rich and Ryan Meyer, Johnny Stevens, and Matt Kofos. After starting as a bar cover band, they relocated to Brooklyn, New York, where they recorded The Worst Humans EP with producer Joel Hamilton.
L.A.B. is a New Zealand reggae band formed in Whakatāne, Bay of Plenty in 2016. Its founding members are Brad Kora and Stuart Kora of the band Kora. They soon engaged Joel Shadbolt on lead vocals and guitar, Ara Adams-Tamatea, formerly of Katchafire, as bassist, and Miharo Gregory as keyboardist. The band mostly composes reggae music, with a mix of electronic, blues, rock and funk music.
