Midstory is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and media think tank in Toledo, Ohio. [1]
Midstory was founded in Toledo, Ohio, in 2018 by Samuel Chang, Logan Sander, Ruth Chang, and Alex Lim. The four founders left their hometowns to attend Ivy League colleges before returning to the Midwest to start Midstory with the goal of attracting young people to the Midwest. [2] The name “Midstory” comes from the ecological term meaning the middle layer in a canopy of trees. [3]
Midstory outreaches students to give them opportunities to explore the Midwest while researching and developing their own multimedia stories. Midstory began its summer college and high school programs in 2019. [4] Midstory's virtual college programs in 2020 and 2021 provided students from across the country the opportunity to experience and build connections to Toledo and other Midwestern cities. [5] Midstory's projects focus on city infrastructure, demography, local journalism, voting, and water. Among these projects, the Water Project and the Demography Project focus on local issues of algal blooms in Lake Erie and Toledo’s declining population, respectively. [6]
Midstory co-founders have appeared as guests of WGTE Public Media’s radio show, Rough Draft Diaries with Haley Taylor on two occasions. [7] [8] Midstory also contributed a segment on the Great Black Swamp in a mini-documentary with WGTE aired in Oct. 2019 on Detroit Public Television as part of the Great Lakes Now series. [9]
Midstory was a partner with the Toledo Design Collective to revitalize the Garfield neighborhood in East Toledo through the Garfield Community Plan. [10] [11]
2020: Midstory received the 2020 Nonprofit Innovation Award from the Center for Nonprofit Resources and the Greater Toledo Community Foundation. [12]
Toledo is a city in and the county seat of Lucas County, Ohio, United States. At the 2020 census, it had a population of 270,871, making Toledo the fourth-most populous city in Ohio, after Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati. Toledo is the 84th-most populous city in the United States. It is the principal city of the Toledo metropolitan area, which had 606,240 residents in 2020. Toledo also serves as a major trade center for the Midwest; its port is the fifth-busiest on the Great Lakes.
The Toledo War (1835–36), also known as the Michigan–Ohio War or the Ohio–Michigan War, was a boundary dispute between the U.S. state of Ohio and the adjoining territory of Michigan over what is now known as the Toledo Strip. Control of the mouth of the Maumee River and the inland shipping opportunities it represented, and the good farmland to the west were seen by both parties as valuable economic assets.
The Great Black Swamp was a glacially fed wetland in northwest Ohio and northeast Indiana, United States, that existed from the end of the Wisconsin glaciation until the late 19th century. Comprising extensive swamps and marshes, with some higher, drier ground interspersed, it occupied what was formerly the southwestern part of proglacial Lake Maumee, a Holocene precursor to Lake Erie. The area was about 25 miles (40 km) wide and 100 miles (160 km) long, covering an estimated 1,500 square miles (4,000 km2). Gradually drained and settled in the second half of the 19th century, it is now highly productive farmland. However, this development has been detrimental to the ecosystem as a result of agricultural runoff. This runoff, in turn, has contributed to frequent toxic algal blooms in Lake Erie.

Interstate 75 (I-75) runs from Cincinnati to Toledo by way of Dayton in the US state of Ohio. The highway enters the state running concurrently with I-71 from Kentucky on the Brent Spence Bridge over the Ohio River and into the Bluegrass region. I-75 continues along the Mill Creek Expressway northward to the Butler County line just north of I-275. From there, the freeway runs into the Miami Valley and then passes through the Great Black Swamp before crossing into Michigan.
John D. Payne was an American collegiate and professional football coach. He served as head coach for the Saskatchewan Roughriders (1973–1976), Hamilton Tiger-Cats (1978–1980) and Ottawa Rough Riders (1996) of the Canadian Football League (CFL), compiling a career record of 62–63–3. Payne also was the head football coach at Abilene Christian University from 1985 to 1990, posting a mark of 26–34–2.

Tiedtke's was a former grocery and department store chain based in Toledo, Ohio. At its peak, the store, which began life as a grocery, occupied a huge building at Summit Street and Adams downtown, maintained an annex store two blocks away, and a branch store in north Toledo. It was a unique Toledo experience, and a community center. The family-founded store changed hands several times before all locations closed by 1973. The original store building was destroyed by fire two years later.
First Look Media is an American nonprofit media organization founded by Pierre Omidyar in October 2013 as a venue for "original, independent journalism". The project was started as a collaboration with Glenn Greenwald, Jeremy Scahill, and Laura Poitras with a promised $250 million in funding from Omidyar. The National Museum of the Great Lakes is a museum in the Toledo Maritime Center, a heritage location on the banks of the Maumee River on the east side of Toledo, Ohio. Midwest United FC is an American soccer club based in Grand Rapids, Michigan who play in the Great Lakes Division of the USL W League. The team was founded in 2016 as the women's side to the Grand Rapids FC brand. Their first season was in 2017. In December 2019, Midwest United FC assumed ownership of the team and rebranded it under their name.
