Mieke Marple (born 1986) is an American artist and writer based in Los Angeles, California. [1]

Early life and education

Marple was born in Mountain View, CA, and grew up in Palo Alto in the heart of Silicon Valley. She received a BA in Fine Art from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2008. [2]

Career

Marple began her artist career as an intern at Blum & Poe and David Zwirner galleries. [2] She worked as an artist assistant for the artist Karl Haendel and partnered with Davida Nemeroff on Night Gallery in 2011. [2] While still at Night Gallery, she participated in art fairs like Frieze New York, Frieze London, Art Basel Hong Kong, and NADA Miami, and worked with artists like Sterling Ruby, Laura Owens, Samara Golden, and Josh Kline, among others. [2]

In 2014, Marple founded "Sexy Beast", a fundraiser for Planned Parenthood LA (PPLA), with Davida Nemeroff. [3] [4]

Marple's art often combines new technologies, such as AR and NFTs, with more traditional practices to create emotionally evocative experiences. [5] [6] Her artwork has been exhibited at MOCA Westport, [7] the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb, Croatia, [8] the Seattle NFT Museum [9] and other arts galleries and platforms. Her work has been featured in The New York Times , [10] The Guardian , [11] Autre, [12] Fortune Magazine , [13] White Hot Magazine, [14] Flaunt, [15] and some others.

As a writer, Marple has published articles about arts and other topics with The Huffington Post, [16] Zyzzyva, [17] Lit Hub, [18] ARTnews, [19] Artsy [20] and other media platforms.

The 57th Venice Biennale was an international contemporary art exhibition held between May and November 2017. The Venice Biennale takes place biennially in Venice, Italy. Michael Joseph Winkelmann, known professionally as Beeple, is an American digital artist, graphic designer, and animator known for selling NFTs. In his art, he uses various media to create comical, phantasmagoric works that make political and social commentary while using pop culture figures as references. British auction house Christie's has called him "A visionary digital artist at the forefront of NFTs". Beeple was introduced to NFTs in October 2020 and credits Pak for providing his first "primer" on selling NFTs. The NFT associated with Everydays: the First 5000 Days, a collage of images from his "Everydays" series, was sold on March 12, 2021, for $69 million in cryptocurrency to an investor in NFTs. It is the first purely non-fungible token to be sold by Christie's. The auction house had previously sold Block 21, an NFT with accompanying physical painting for approximately $130,000 in October 2020.

1:54 is an annual contemporary African art fair held in London during the October Frieze Week since 2013. It was organized to improve the representation of contemporary African art in worldwide exhibitions, and is the foremost art fair dedicated to contemporary African art in the primary art market. By 2016, the show had become three times the size of the original exhibition with 130 artists represented. A spin-off, pop-up show, 1:54 NY, has been held annually in New York City during the May Frieze New York since 2015. A third location, in Marrakech, began in 2018. Critics have described 1:54 as a highlight of the Frieze event, and wrote that the show's publicity for contemporary African art outweighs the issues of lumping disparate geographic traditions together. The fair's representation from African galleries has improved as the international market for African art expands.

The 60th Venice Biennale is an international contemporary art exhibition held between April and November 2024. The Venice Biennale takes place every two years in Venice, Italy, with some limited exceptions. Artistic director Adriano Pedrosa curated its central exhibition, Foreigners Everywhere, and 88 countries contributed national pavilions.
