Mike Heald is a retired American soccer midfielder who spent most of his career with professional teams in Florida.

Youth

In 1990, Heald graduated from Bloomingdale High School where he was named All-State in each of his 3 years in high school. In 1990, Heald was named by Gatorade as the Player of the Year in Florida. He was also honored as the 1990 Jose A. Alvarez Hillsborough County Outstanding High School Soccer Player of the Year. [1]

He attended the University of Tampa where he played on the men's soccer team from 1990 to 1993. While at UT, Heald was named to the U-20 National Soccer team in 1991. He also was selected to attend the U.S. Olympic Festival for the South Region in 1991. In 1992, University of Tampa were the NCAA National Runners-up.

Professional

In 1994, Heald played for the New Orleans Riverboat Gamblers of the USISL. In both 1993 and 1994, Heald played for the U.S. men's national 'B' team. [2] In the fall of 1994, Heald joined the Brandon Braves for the USISL indoor season. [3] He would return for the 1995-1996 indoor season as well. In May 1995, he signed with the Tampa Bay Cyclones. [4] He played for them both in 1995 and in 1996. On February 2, 1997, the Tampa Bay Mutiny selected Heald in the third round (twenty-seventh overall) of the 1997 MLS Supplemental Draft. [5]

He played one season in Major League Soccer with the Tampa Bay Mutiny, as well as several seasons in the USISL. However, his greatest fame as a player came in eight seasons of indoor soccer where he was a consistent scoring threat with the Kansas City Attack and Milwaukee Wave. He also earned twelve caps, scoring five goals, with the United States national futsal team.

Derek Backman is a retired U.S. soccer midfielder who played in the USISL. Backman played for the Arcadia Shepherds in his native South Africa before moving to the United States in 1983 to attend the College of Boca Raton. In 1987, Backman and his teammates won the NAIA national men's soccer championship. Backman was also a two time first team NAIA All American. He graduated in 1989 and was inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004. In 1988, Backman signed with the Tampa Bay Rowdies as it prepared to enter the newly established American Soccer League. He moved to the Fort Lauderdale Strikers for the first part of the 1989 season before returning to the Rowdies for the end of the season. He then remained a regular with the team until sidelined in 1993 with a stress fracture in his left ankle. In 1990, the Rowdies moved to the American Professional Soccer League and folded at the end of the 1993 season. Backman remained in the Tampa area, coaching youth soccer and working in his family's interior design business. He also played with the amateur St. Petersburg Kickers. In 1995, Backman gained his U.S. citizenship. That year, he played for the expansion Tampa Bay Cyclones in the USISL. In February 1996, the Tampa Bay Mutiny selected Backman in the 11th round of the 1996 MLS Inaugural Player Draft. He played 25 games with the Mutiny in 1996, but only three in 1997. He retired in 1998. He currently plays for the amateur team Kaknballz FC, who won the state title in 2017.

Andrew Restrepo is a retired American soccer defender who played one season with the MetroStars in Major League Soccer. He is currently a volunteer assistant coach for the University of Tampa men's team.

Edmundo "Eddie" Rodriguez is a Mexican retired soccer player. He spent most of his career in the U.S. leagues including two seasons in Major League Soccer.
